The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team won its final non-conference game of the season topping the East Carolina, 16-9, on Saturday (April 21) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Overall, nine Wolverines scored in the win: freshman Caitlin Muir (3), junior Adrian Pendino (3), graduate student Bianca Brueckner (2), sophomore Chandler Kirby (2), sophomore Molly Garrett (2) and one each from sophomore Nadine Stewart, freshman Maggie Kane, freshman Erin Daly, and senior Mae Tarr. Michigan's defense allowed limited opportunities for East Carolina, holding the Pirates to 23 shots and only three free-position attempts -- only one of which was converted. The Wolverines also forced eight of the Pirates' 12 turnovers. Michigan held the upper hand in every team statistical category, including a 38-23 shot count and a 17-10 advantage on draw controls. Kane won a career-high 10 draw controls to lead U-M. The Pirates opened up the scoring in the first half with a goal at the 28:43 mark, but the Wolverines answered less than a minute later with an unassisted goal from Kirby to tie it up at 1. The Wolverines continued their offensive attack with two quick free-position goals two minutes apart, scored by Pendino, to give the Wolverines a 3-1 lead. With 19:46 left in the first half, the Pirates cut Michigan's lead to one, 3-2, off an unassisted goal. Michigan responded by going on a 4-0 run, with Muir scoring two of the four. After a goal from the Pirates at the 9:52 mark, the Wolverines went on a 3-0 run to increase their lead to 10-3 just before a goal from East Carolina with 29 seconds left in the half. The Wolverines entered the locker room with a 10-4 lead. Michigan's lead was quickly extended to 11-4 on a goal by Molly Garrett just under one minute into the second half. Pendino followed with her third of the day at the 22:38 mark. The Pirates slowed Michigan's momentum with their fifth goal of the afternoon at the 22:38 mark. Michigan's powerful offense continued, as it went on another 3-0 run, extending the lead 14-5, until East Carolina scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 14-7. The game ended with four goals in five minutes of play, with each team recording two, to make the final score 16-9. Michigan will wrap-up its season when the Wolverines travel to State College, Pennsylvania, to take on Penn State next weekend (April 28). The first draw is scheduled for 2 pm.
