The Lehigh women's lacrosse team fell into an early 4-0 hole, but responded with the next four goals to pull even, on its way to a 12-11 victory at Fairfield in the nonleague finale on Sunday afternoon. Junior Kellie Gough scored three goals for her third hat trick of the season while senior Kierstyn Voiro was stellar at both ends of the field, which included scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal for the second time in three days. With their third straight win, the Mountain Hawks snapped a five-game losing streak against Fairfield dating back to 2010 and improved to 5-3 on the season heading into their Patriot League opener at Boston University on Saturday. "We definitely played better as the game went on," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "I think we solved what they were doing on attack a little bit and settled down defensively, and then our attack responded by executing some of our offense later in the game. Those two things combined really made a difference." One game after scoring the game-winning goal in triple overtime at Mount St. Mary's, Voiro finished Sunday afternoon with two goals, three groundballs, three caused turnovers and two draw controls. "Voiro had a great game," said Redfern. "She had really big plays on defense and her goals came at critical times. Great game for her." 3/11/2018 Women's Lacrosse at Fairfield, 3/11/18Women's Lacrosse at Fairfield, 3/11/18 Women's Lacrosse at Fairfield, 3/11/18 Sophomore Sondra Dickey posted a goal, assist, four draw controls, two groundballs and two caused turnovers, corralling the biggest draw control of the game with less than 10 seconds remaining to secure the one-goal victory. In total, four Mountain Hawks posted multiple goals. Freshman Julianne Puckette scored her first two career goals while junior Olivia Kelly scored Lehigh's first two goals of the game. Junior Courtney Henig tallied four points behind a goal and three assists. Lehigh trailed 4-0 just over five minutes into the game, but four straight Mountain Hawk goals, which included two from Kelly and goals from senior Haley Wentzel and Gough, pulled Lehigh even with 13:47 left in the first half. The teams went back-and-forth over the remainder of the half. Fairfield went up by two at 7-5, but Puckette scored her first-career goal at the 2:02 mark and Voiro converted a free-position goal with four seconds remaining to even the score at the half. After trading goals to start the second half, the Mountain Hawks scored 3-of-4 to create separation. Henig converted a free-position shot at the 7:46 mark to give Lehigh a 10-9 lead, then just over a minute later, Gough scored off a feed from Henig. Voiro rounded out the scoring with 1:33 remaining to give Lehigh a 12-10 advantage . The goal proved significant as Fairfield pulled within 12-11 with 11 seconds on the clock, but the Mountain Hawks won the ensuing draw to secure their second consecutive one-goal victory. Final shots were 32-31 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held an 18-11 edge in groundballs. Fairfield held the edge in draw controls, 13-12. Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Sagi was strong, making 10 saves. "Sam definitely did her job back there," said Redfern. "Sondra (Dickey) is the workhorse of the team and is contributing at both ends and on the draw team. I thought Alex Ladda did a great job for us. She ended up marking Brenna Connolly after she had three of their first four goals. We changed our defense a little bit and Alex held her scoreless the rest of the game. That adjustment was important." Lehigh will open Patriot League play on Saturday when it travels to Boston University to face the Terriers.
