The Iona Lacrosse program (5-2) controlled play from start to finish on the road Sunday, rolling to an 11-6 win over Furman. Senior Kaitlyn Becker netted a career-high three goals on five shots and caused two turnovers. Jenna Tolzmann, Emma Hager and Christine Gironda each found the back of the net twice and Katelyn Noschese and Pamela Giordano each scored once. Shannon McCaffrey continued her strong defensive presence, making 12 saves and grabbing one ground ball. Maureen Murphy led the team in caused turnovers with three and was followed by Becker and Erin O'Donnell who each collected a pair. The Gaels outshot Furman 32-26 and caused 12 turnovers as opposed to the Paladins' five. Iona controlled only 6-12 draws and converted on three of nine free position attempts. Having four goals in the team's first six games, Becker sprung out of the gate, tallying a hat-trick in the first 4:41 of the game, all coming unassisted. After a Shannon McCaffrey save, Tolzmann found a cutting Hager to put the Gaels up four just 5:25 into the first half. Two more saves by McCaffrey preserved the shutout before Giordano connected with her lone tally of the game with just under 20 minutes remaining. Noschese followed five minutes later to put the Gaels up 6-0. Two goals by the Paladins cut into the Iona advantage but the Maroon & Gold went into the break up by four, 6-2. Tolzmann gave Iona some more breathing room with a goal scored less than one minute into the second half. McCaffrey stopped a free-position attempt 20 seconds later and was rewarded with a goal scored from Gironda while Furman was on the man-advantage. With 26:20 remaining, the Paladins cut into the Iona lead with two goals scored within 23 ticks of each other, but Hager scored two minutes after to put the Gaels back up five, 9-4. Tolzmann scored her 14th goal of the season with 20:54 left but was answered by two more Furman goals as Iona's lead was trimmed to 10-6 with 12:38 left in regulation. Iona held the host off the scoreboard for the remainder and received Gironda's second tally of the season with 8:07 to play. McCaffrey was untested for the final nine minutes of play as the Gaels defense held strong throughout. The Maroon & Gold continue their road trip on Wednesday, heading up to North Carolina to take on Davidson at 6:30 PM.
