The No. 23/RV Georgetown University women's lacrosse team defeated the Vanderbilt University Commodores, 15-9, Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup in Nashville, Tennessee. With the victory, the Hoyas improved to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in league play, sitting in a tie for second place with three conference games remaining. “I’m happy with our progress today as a team,” said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. “We executed on both ends of the field so I’m pleased with the performance overall.” Junior attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) led the way with six goals and one assist. Classmate Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) managed two goals, while sophomore midfielder Liza Liotta (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s School for Girls) score a pair as well. Eight different Hoyas scored a point in the contest as Georgetown cruised to victory. Junior goalkeeper Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) played all 60 minutes with 10 stops to her credit. On the defensive end, sophomore attacker Natalia Lynch (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) had three caused turnovers, as well as a goal, in the game. Gebhardt opened the scoring with a goal just 23 seconds into the contest. Vanderbilt tied it on a free position shot, but graduate attacker Cristina McCarthy (Rockville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross/James Madison) sparked a 3-0 GU run capped off by a Ryan free position at 22:41 to make it 4-1. The Commodores (8-6, 3-3 BIG EAST) broke up the scoring, but the Blue & Gray answered as freshman midfielder Mary Pagano (Short Hills, N.J./Pingry School) began a 4-0 run with Gebhardt knocking down two more. The Commodores scored two before the half, but a goal from Liotta made it 9-4 in favor of the Hoyas at the break. It was Vanderbilt that scored first in the second half, however, Gebhardt answered right back for her fifth of the game. Vanderbilt scored at 21:07, but Ryan hit one from Gebhardt to open a 3-0 run as GU took the 13-6 lead. Over the final nine minutes of play, the Commodores outscored the Hoyas, 3-2. However, Georgetown had built the comfortable lead as the Blue & Gray cruised to the 15-9 victory. A pair of Hoyas hit milestones in the victory as Gebhardt notched her 100th career goal, and Chomo managed her 100th career save. Gebhardt is one of just 17 players in program history to hit the century mark, and Chomo is the 15th player in GU history to notch 100 stops. Georgetown will be back in action on Wednesday in a midweek matchup with the University of Connecticut on Wednesday at Cooper Field.
