The No. 23/RV Georgetown University women’s lacrosse team needed extra time, but came away with a thrilling 9-8 overtime victory over the Marquette University Golden Eagles (9-7, 5-3 BIG EAST) Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas clinch the No. 2 see in the BIG EAST Championship and improve to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in league play. Just 1:22 into overtime, junior attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) executed the Hoyas’ plan perfectly as she scored a goal from the right side to give the Blue & Gray the sudden-victory win and nab second last-second game winner in as many contests. “Quality teams figure out a way to win at the end of the day, no matter how they are playing, and we’ve done that for the last two games,” said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. “I give Marquette a lot of credit for how they played today, but we need to get better shooting-wise. We’re figuring out how to win games which gives us confidence, but now we’re trying to get consistent on both ends of the field.” Gebhardt led the Hoyas with three goals, while sophomore midfielder Natalia Lynch (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) managed two goals and an assist. Freshman attacker Caroline Frock (Westminster, Md./Westminster) was the other Hoya with multiple points tallying a pair of goals. On the defensive end of the field, junior goalkeeper Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) had seven saves on the afternoon. Georgetown outshot Marquette, 37-28, but pulled in nine draw controls while the Golden Eagles managed 10. The Hoya defense forced 19 MU turnovers and held a 6-4 advantage in caused turnovers. Lynch started the scoring off with a free position goal minutes into the contest. As both teams battled through the midfield, GU managed the clear and Lynch assisted by senior midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) on the second goal to make it 2-0 at the 22-minute mark. The Golden Eagles answered, but a free position by Frock gave the Blue & Gray the two-goal advantage. Gebhardt put the Hoyas up three, but another Marquette goal in a man-up situation made it 4-2. A big defensive stop resulted in the Hoyas streaking up the field, as Lynch scored her second of the game with the MU defense searching for an answer. Frock tallied her second of the game with 10:05 remaining in the first half, but Marquette would not go away as the team cut it to one, 6-5, on a 3-0 run. The Hoyas stopped the momentum with a goal from Gebhardt as junior attacker Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) took a hard foul but managed the assist. Georgetown went into the break holding onto the 7-5 advantage. Marquette managed the first goal of the second half on a free position shot and then added another to tie the game at seven. The Hoyas managed their first score of the second half at 13:38 to regain the 8-7 advantage as sophomore attacker Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) connected on the free position goal. The Golden Eagles would tie the game at 7:21 as Georgetown’s shooting went cold. As the seconds ticked by, the Hoyas had opportunities, but MU keeper Jules Horning made some big stops to keep it knotted at eight. On the other end of the field, the GU defense forced shot clock violations and got stops to hold the Marquette offense at bay. In the final seconds of regulation, a shot from Lynch was stopped by Horning to force overtime. Marquette won the only draw in overtime, but the defense stood strong and Ryan forced a turnover as GU took possession. This set up the game-winning play as Georgetown pulled out another last second victory winning 9-8. The victory marked the 150th career victory for Fried as well as GU’s 12th consecutive BIG EAST Championship berth. Georgetown is the only institution to have qualified for the championship since its inception in 2007. The Hoyas will close out the home schedule on Wednesday as the squad hosts the No. 10/8 Loyola University Greyhounds at 3 p.m. at Cooper Field. The game was rescheduled from earlier this season when it was called for inclement weather. Live stats and a webcast featuring Monika Moore will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
