The Susquehanna University men's lacrosse team erased two early deficits to come away with a solid non-conference team win Wednesday afternoon. Susquehanna (5-6) posted a 14-11 victory over Misericordia University (3-4) as four different River Hawks tallied their first points of the season. Susquehanna 14, Misericordia 11 How It Happened Misericordia, who entered the game averaging 15.83 goals per game (Top 20 in Division III), jumped out to a 3-0 lead at 11:30, including Garrett Heidecker scoring one seven seconds in off the face-off. The River Hawks responded with four straight to claim a one-goal advantage with 30 seconds left in the first period. Senior midfielder Jack Donnelly (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) notched a goal and an assist in the 4-0 run. Patrick Luzzi struck again for his second of the day with nine ticks on the clock to send the Cougars into the second frame with a one-goal margin. The two sides alternated the first four goals before sophomore attackman Colton Dick (Owings, Md./Northern) broke the 6-6 draw with his second of the afternoon with under a minute to go in the half. SU took a 7-6 lead into halftime. Susquehanna stretched its lead to three before a two-minute penalty led MU to cut the lead to 9-8 at 8:17 with a pair of man-up goals from Nick Torzilli and Luzzi. Back-to-back goals by Dick capped a 3-0 run and widened the River Hawks' lead to 12-8 with one more quarter to play. The Cougars outscored the hosts, 3-2, in the fourth for the 14-11 final. Freshman attackman Jack McLaughlin (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) scored both for SU. Inside the Box Score Misericordia outshot the River Hawks, 57-43, but senior captain Dylan Abplanalp (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) posted 18 saves, his seventh double-digit save performance of the season, to keep the Cougars at bay. MU also edged Susquehanna, 33-32, despite career-highs of seven ground balls for both Abplanalp and junior long-stick midfielder Jacob Fox (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield). Garrett Rogers went 9-of-13 and Heidecker finished 8-of-15 to lead the Cougars to a 17-of-29 effort at face-off X. Top Performers Dick finished the game with a season-best four goals and two assists to go along with two ground balls while Donnelly contributed three goals and an assist. McLaughlin chipped in his first career hat trick while senior captain Jake Smolokoff (Oceanport, N.J./Red Bank Regional) also had a multiple-point day with two assists. Luzzi ended the game with a game-high eight points on six goals and two helpers. Up Next for the River Hawks Mar. 30 at Drew (1-8, 0-0 LC) – Madison, N.J. – 1:00 p.m.
