POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar men's lacrosse team fell just short against Montclair State on Wednesday evening, dropping the 10-8 decision at Weinberg Field. Junior Michael Mullen (Dresher, PA) led the Brewers with three goals and one assist. Spencer Duryee (Whitehouse Station, NJ) finished with two goals, while Drew Adams (Westwood, MA), Connor Deehan (Westwood, MA) and Logan Hyde (Manhasset, NY) tacked on a goal each. Tomas Meade (Corvallis, OR) had a team-high two assists and Michael Killion (McLean, VA) added one. It was a back-and-forth game throughout with the Red Hawks closing the first with a 4-3 advantage. Duryee got the Brewers on the board first at 11:33 after Meade scooped up a groundball and passed quickly to Duryee for the open shot. Montclair answered four minutes later at 8:26. The Red Hawks won the ensuing faceoff, but Stephan Fleps (Winfield, IL) caused the turnover to give Vassar possession. Killion then picked up Mullen for his first goal of the game. Montclair got two goals from Christian Boyle and Dan Bellezza in the second and the Red Hawks' jumped out to a 6-3 lead. Vassar outscored Montclair 4-1 in the third, with opening goals from Hyde and Adams. In what was a 7-7 Vassar lead at the end of the third, the Brewers took the lead late into the quarter. After a succession of shots from Logan Hyde (Manhassett, NY) and Dekker Stebel (San Diego, CA) put the pressure on the Montclair defense, Hyde scooped up the groundball off a block, passed to Nick Diamond (Boca Raton, FL) who found Duryee for the score. Montclair scored three unanswered goals while shutting out Vassar in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win. At 8:21, Bryan Peters tied it 8-8 and the Red Hawks scored again at 2:54 and 1:36. Meade led the Brewers with six groundballs, while Fleps had a team-high four caused turnovers. Erik Mikelinich (Dix Hills, NY) started in goal and had 12 saves. Cameron Erdman (Wyckoff, NJ) went 9-of-19 on faceoffs. Vassar travels to Swarthmore next on Saturday. Game is set to start at 2 p.m.
