The Bryn Athyn men's lacrosse team fell into a 10-0 hole after the first quarter of its Colonial States Athletic Conference match against Montclair State and were unable to put itself out as the Lions fell to the Red Hawks 21-7 Saturday afternoon on General Ronald K. Nelson Field. The opening 15 minutes was all Montclair State (6-6, 2-1 CSAC) as the Red Hawks outshot the Lions (3-7, 2-2 CSAC) 26-1 to help get out to the 10-0 lead. Matt Haemmerle scored three of his match-high five goals and assisted on two others as pair of a seven-point day (five goals, two assists). Jesse James West had recorded seven of his eight points by scoring three times and assisting on four goals in the quarter. Tyler McCreery, Connor McCoy, and Joe Laracca also scored for the Red Hawks. Bryn Athyn got off to a strong start in the second quarter as Cameron Leech and Kyle Shaffer scored in the opening five minutes to trim the deficit to 10-2. Vandegrift assisted on Leech's goal, while Leech picked up an assist on the first of Shaffer's three goals. Montclair State answered right back with three consecutive goals—two from Haemmerle and one by Jon Lanzalotto—to go up 13-1 at the 2:28 mark of the quarter. Shaffer, with an assist from Shane McCurdy, and Montclair State's Christian Boyle traded goals in the final 2:01 to make the score 14-3 at the half. After McCreery opened the third-quarter scoring just 12 seconds in, Shaffer completed his hat trick at the 10:42 mark on the man-up with an assist going to Vandegrift. With the score sitting at 17-4, Vandegrift put his name in the goal column at the 7:53 mark to pull the Lions within 12. Robert Brennan scored with 20 seconds left in the quarter to push the gap to 18-5. Leech netted his second goal of the afternoon with 8:27 left in the contest. After goals by Dan Delargy and Robert Brennan, Vandegrift completed his four-point day with a goal with 6:33 remaining. Lion goalie Brad DePasquale stopped 16 shots. Montclair State used three goalies. Starter Jack Cardew was beaten on all three shots he faced in the first half, while Matthew McLaren made three saves in the third, and Tom Pollock stopped four shots in the fourth. Bryn Athyn travels to Rosemont for a CSAC contest on Wednesday, April 17 at 7 p.m.
