Senior midfielder Elena Romesburg tied her career high with five goals and James Madison's seniors accounted for 11 goals, as the fourth-ranked Dukes battled past Hofstra 15-10 in Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Sentara Park. The Dukes improved to 15-1 on the year and 5-0 in CAA play while the Pride fell to 8-8 and 2-4. The win marked JMU's best 16-game start in school history and made the 2018 senior class the winningest in program history, with their 54th win. Romesburg matched her career high in both goals and points, finishing with five goals and an assist for a game-best six points. Senior attacker Kristen Gaudian posted five points off two goals and a game-high three assists, which tied her single-game record, and senior attacker Morgan Hardt notched two goals and one assist. One Duke set a JMU single-season record in the win, as senior midfielder Haley Warden, who already owns the JMU career draw controls record, set the single-season mark. She tied for game-high honors with five draws and now has 71 this season, surpassing the previous record of 69. Gaudian, the team's second-leading draw specialist, also had four. Sophomore Emma Johnson led the defense with three caused turnovers while tying a career high with four ground balls. Senior defender Corinne Schmidt had two caused turnovers, while sophomore attacker Maddie McDaniel had a pair of caused turnovers and three draws. Between the pipes, redshirt freshman Molly Dougherty made nine saves with a pair of ground balls to improve to 7-0 in goal. The Dukes out-shot Hofstra 29-24 (23-20 SOG). They also held advantages in draw controls (15-12), caused turnovers (11-8) and ground balls (24-15). The Pride only committed three second-half turnovers to finish the game with two fewer than JMU (26-28). Hofstra was led by Alyssa Parrella's four goals and one assist, while Alexa Mattera had two goals and a helper. JMU opened the game with four goals in the opening 10 minutes to grab the early advantage. JMU's first eight scores came by way of the senior class as the Dukes took an 8-1 lead with 13:04 to play. Romesburg scored three straight goals in a 2:03 span to finish the first half with four goals, allowing JMU to grab a 10-5 lead at the break. JMU opened the second half with back-to-back goals to grab its largest lead, at 12-5, with 24:51 to play. QUOTING COACH SHELLEY KLAES-BAWCOMBE "It was a great day for the Dukes, starting off with goals early by seniors Annie Dell and Morgan Hardt. Today was a testament to how every senior has been able to come in and make a difference within this program. They don't just do it off the field but on the field as well. Hofstra gave us a good fight today and it gives us a good taste of what to expect heading into our last regular-season game [at Towson]. We have to be even sharper next time out. Hofstra never gave up and kept us on our toes the entire game." SENIOR SALUTE JMU's senior class has won more games than any class that has come before them, as they improved to 54-23 over the last four seasons. Today's win surpassed the 2013 senior class, which won 53 games. This class is just the fifth in school history to win 50 or more games in a four-year span. Of JMU's 15 goals, 11 were scored by seniors, including the first of the game by midfielder Annie Dell – her first career goal. WARDEN MAKING HISTORY Earlier this season, Haley Warden broke the JMU career draw controls record. On Senior Day, she set another mark, breaking the single-season record early in the second half. She currently has 71 in 2018, which bested the previous record of 69 set by herself last year and Steph Finley, who reached the mark in 2014. TWO TO 50 GOALS FOR FIRST TIME EVER Kristen Gaudian leads the CAA with 54 goals following Sunday's win, but teammate Elena Romesburg also joined the 50-goal club against Hofstra, as she now has 51. It's the first time in school history that JMU has produced a pair of 50-goal scorers in the same season. Gaudian's 54 ranks tied for fifth in JMU single-season history, while Romesburg's 51 is tied for 9th. UP NEXT JMU closes the regular season next Saturday, April 28 when it travel to Towson, Md., to take on rival and sixth-ranked Towson. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Johnny Unitas Stadium and can be seen on Lax Sports Network. The winner will claim the outright regular-season championship and be the No. 1 seed for the CAA Women's Lacrosse Championship.
