ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Nate Maloney had one thought in mind as he broke away from the defense and raced toward the Chestnut Hill College goal on Sunday afternoon. "Just throw a fake and put it in the back of the net,'" Maloney said. Maloney did just that and delivered the winning goal with 1:10 remaining in the fourth quarter as the Roberts Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team overcame a five-goal deficit late in the first half and defeated the Griffins 13-12 on a blustery afternoon at Redhawks Field. "There's no give up in these guys," said Roberts coach Rocky Delfino, whose team improved to 3-0. The winning goal epitomized the Redhawks' afternoon. Roberts was a man-up and looking to take the lead for only the second time in the game when a missed pass resulted in a turnover near the top of the box. A rugby-like scrum ensued with Roberts' Hunter Lemieux recovering the ball and feeding it to Maloney for the decisive tally. "Fortunately, the ball came right to Hunter and he fed me," said Maloney, who scored twice in the second half. Sophomore Reid Jackowski scored four goals and added an assist to lead Roberts. Lemieux contributed three goals and two assists and became the first player in Roberts history to reach 200 career points when he scored to bring Roberts within 8-7 with 6:33 to play in the third quarter. Jordon Deats also scored three goals for the Redhawks. Sophomore Aidan Sheehan made 13 saves, including several from close range, for the Redhawks. "Our defense just worked hard so that I could see their shots today," Sheehan said. "It was difficult to talk with the wind like it was, but we were able to get the job done." Chestnut hill jumped to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter and held a 7-2 advantage after Zachary Whalen's goal with 1:53 remaining in the half. However, Jackowski scored twice to bring the Redhawks within 7-4 at the half. Jackowski and Deats scored to bring the Redhawks within 7-6 with 7:46 to play in the third quarter, but Roberts did not take its first lead until Dan Doviak found the back of the net to make it 11-10 with 7:37 left in the game. Chestnut Hill scored twice to go in front 12-11, but Mitch Streety won a faceoff and scored unassisted to tie the game with 2:49 remaining. Streety won 22 of 28 faceoffs (.78.6%) and led Roberts with 10 ground balls. His dominance at the 'X' was one of the keys to Roberts' comeback. "Mitch had himself a game today," Delfino said. Sophomore Luke Delavak added nine ground balls for the Redhawks, who earned their first victory in seven games against Chestnut Hill. Roberts held Chestnut Hill to five goals in the second half and played with more energy throughout the second half. "(The comeback) shows that we never give up and that we always work hard," Sheehan said. "It was all about doing everything that we could to win." Chestnut Hill had a final chance to tie the game on a man-up opportunity with 1.4 seconds to play, but failed to connect on a long alley-oop pass as time expired. "We can play through everything," Maloney said. "It definitely shows our character. I think today's game is a good character win and definitely shows who we are as a team." The Redhawks begin a busy three-game week at 3 p.m. Wednesday at defending national champion and top-ranked LeMoyne.
