Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse hit a roadblock on Wednesday night, falling 14-5 to the visiting Muhlenberg College Mules. With the setback, Swarthmore slipped to 7-4 on the season and 0-4 in Centennial action. Muhlenberg improved to 9-3 and 2-2 in league play with the win. Swarthmore struck first, making it look easy as Nathaniel Johns tallied a goal with 13:22 to play in the first quarter off of a pass from Mason Evarts. Muhlenberg responded with two consecutive goals, and Swarthmore evened the count with 2:45 to go in the first off of Will Vespole's 14th goal of the year, again assisted by Evarts. Muhlenberg posted two more goals to close out the first quarter. Swarthmore, playing catch up, tagged a man-up goal with 10:30 left in the second on a strike by Dylan Rittenhouse, assisted by Jake Ross. Muhlenberg opened things up with a run of four straight goals. The Garnet tallied another man-up goal in the third quarter as Austin Chang finished a pass from Evarts with 6:45 left in the period, cutting the Mules' lead to 8-4. Rittenhouse's second of the game came with 9:53 left in the contest off a feed from Chang to make the count 10-5. Muhlenberg closed out the game with a 4-0 run and Swarthmore could not get any closer. Ryan Izquierdo won the majority of faceoffs, claiming 14-of-22 draws and scooping up five ground balls. Defender Jack Belluche tallied four ground balls, and Griffin Soriano snagged three while causing three turnovers. Frankie Dillon and Jack Ballou split time in net with each conceding seven goals. Swarthmore took as many shots as Muhlenberg, 34, and put 19 of them on goal, but Muhlenberg's keeper recorded 14 saves. The Garnet return to action on Saturday at Dickinson College for a 12 p.m. game.
