If you're looking for a relatively simple formula for success for the Princeton men's lacrosse team, you might try what the Tigers did against Stony Brook Saturday afternoon. It goes something like this: face-off wins + successful clears + limited turnovers = more time with the ball in the stick of Michael Sowers. Princeton did all the little things right, and Sowers turned it into a nine-point day with four goals and five assists, leading Princeton to a 16-8 win over Stony Brook and snapping a three-game losing streak for the Tigers. Princeton is at Siena Tuesday (3) before finishing the regular season with games against Dartmouth, Harvard and Cornell, all of which are pretty much must-wins for the team to reach the Ivy League tournament. Princeton came into the game 66th of 69 teams in Division I in clearing but went 14 for 14 against the Seawolves. Princeton turned the ball over 33 times the last two games combined but then turned it over only five times in this one. Princeton came into the game below .500 as a team facing-off for the year and then won 18 of 27, all by Sam Bonafede, who also had 13 ground balls. With plenty of possession time, Sowers made Stony Brook pay, with a goal less than two minutes in and then four assists by the time the first quarter ended as the Tigers built a lead of 6-2. It was 10-3 at the break when Sowers fed Chris Brown just as the second quarter expired. Brown and Austin Sims scored four goals each for Princeton. Chris Pickel was the only Stony Brook player wth more than one goal, as he scored twice. NOTES * The nine points tied a career-high for Sowers, who leads Division I in assists per game and who now has 54 points in nine games this year. Sowers has now played 24 career games and has nine points in four of them; he is the only Princeton men's lacrosse player ever with four career games of at least nine points. * Sims had four, giving him a team-best 22 on the season as he looks to join Tom Schreiber as the only midfielders to lead the team in goals in a season since 2001. Sims also had an assist for a five-point game, giving him 92 career points. Riley Thompson had a goal for Princeton, giving him 90 career points. * Brown had a career-best four goals while tying the five points he had in the opener against Monmouth. Brown is the only player on the team with at least one goal in every game this year. * Freshman Luke Crimmins has three goals the last two weeks, following his first career goal in the loss at Brown with his first career two-goal game in the win over Stony Brook. Phillip Robertson also had a goal and assist. * Tyler Blaisdell made 10 saves, giving him 469 for his career. He trails William Campbell '56 by eight for ninth place all-time at Princeton.
