The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team went on a late run, holding off a potential Oneonta rally to earn its first victory of the season, a 12-10 decision on a cold Tuesday afternoon at Wachenheim Field. Skidmore improves to 1-2 on the season. It's the first victory for Skidmore head coach Joe Martin. Oneonta (2-1) drops its first contest of the season. Ward Mahoney continued his hot start to the season, tallying five points on a career-high four goals, adding one assist. Hudson Miller was effective all over the field, tallying two goals and two assists for four points, causing two turnovers. Alex Miller added a pair of goals and picked up four ground balls. Eric Megnia tallied a goal and added two assists. Garrett Munck scored on one and added an assist. Nick DeBlasio and Will Lukas also tallied goals, with DeBlasio tallying a team-leading seven ground balls. Robert Meindl and Logan Hart added a pair of caused turnovers. Tim Rahill (1-2) made 16 saves in the victory. Stephen Panno led Oneonta with five goals. Andrew Stamatel added three goals and one assist for four points. Zachary Flynn (2-1) was busy in net with 22 saves, adding six ground balls. Skidmore outshot Oneonta by a 45-34 margin and won 14-of-26 face-offs. Skidmore converted on one of six extra-man opportunities, holding Oneonta without an extra-man goal in three attempts. Both teams went 22-for-27 in clear attempts. Mahoney and Megnia made Oneonta pay for an early penalty, teaming up for the opening goal at 7:25 in the first period. The Red Dragons answered with a goal nearly 4:40 later, but Skidmore ended the half with three goals in the final 2:38 of the period to take a 4-1 lead. Oneonta cut the deficit to within one (4-3) with two goals to open up the second, but Munck fed Megnia with a goal at 3:52 to stop the run. Panno scored his fourth of the afternoon with just over two minutes left in the half, and both teams stayed out of the net as Skidmore took a 5-4 lead into halftime. Hudson and Alex Miller linked up with a goal to open the third, giving Skidmore a two-goal cushion (7-5). The teams would trade goals before Oneonta scored twice in three minutes, tying the game at seven entering the final quarter. Hudson Miller found Mahoney for his fourth goal of the game to open the final quarter, giving Skidmore an 8-7 lead at the 9:44 mark. Hudson then scored one on his own, getting a feed from Megnia and going behind-the-back for a brilliant finish, as Skidmore took a 9-7 lead. Lukas and DeBlasio also scored, completing a 4-0 Skidmore run in 4:18, taking an 11-7 lead. Oneonta would try to make a late run in the last 3:35, outscoring Skidmore 3-1 in that span, but it was too little, too late as Skidmore won the final face-off, holding on to victory. The Thoroughbreds will continue their home stand on Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting Endicott at Wachenheim Field.
