Hunter Olsen led the Roos with two goals and one assist but the SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team fell 12-4 to visiting SUNY Poly in the season-opener for both teams on Saturday. THE BASICS Result: SUNY Poly 12, SUNY Canton 4 Location: SUNY Canton Turf Field – Canton, NY Records: SUNY Poly (1-0) | SUNY Canton (0-1) HOW IT HAPPENED SUNY Poly jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the opening quarter holding a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. The Wildcats extended their lead to 7-0 at intermission. The visitors scored the first three goals out of halftime to extend the lead to 10-0. Andrew Garrett got Canton on the board on an unassisted goal with 4:44 left in the third quarter. SUNY Poly led 11-1 after 45 minutes. Olsen and Jacob Facey tallied back-to-back goals to start the fourth quarter with Olsen assisting Facey's tally. Olsen added his second goal of the quarter off a pass from Trent Dow to make it 11-4 with 7:07 to play. The Wildcats added a late score with the man advantage for the 12-4 final. Justin LaDuke made 16 saves in the loss for the Roos (.571 save percentage), while Jared Laird turned aside seven shots in the first half for the visitors without allowing a goal. Samuel Rubin made five saves over 25:19, while Matthew Johnson stopped two shots without conceding a goal over the final 4:41. Poly went 3-for-5 with the extra man, while the Roos were 0-for-2. The Wildcats held the upper hand in ground balls (43-29), shots on goal (28-18) and face offs (11-9). The Roos went 19-for-20 on clears, while Poly was 24-for-29. WHAT'S NEXT The Roos are back in action on Wednesday when they host Clarkson University at 4 p.m.
