Just 15 seconds into overtime, a Dante Castillo goal helped seal a 13-12 victory over Susquehanna University for the Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team. With the victory, the Marlins improve to 5-1 on the season while the River Hawks slide to 3-4. With the score knotted 12-12 after regulation, the Marlins and River Hawks found themselves in a golden goal overtime period. Nathan Sheirburn lined up to take the faceoff, winning it back to Castillo who scooped it mid-stride. The junior looked straight to goal, burrowing his way into a pair of defenders, looking as though his pathway was stopped. Castillo persisted though, maintaining possession until the last second as he fell forward and tossed the ball by the Susquehanna goalie to secure the Marlin victory. The game was tight throughout the entire 60 minutes with the Marlins getting things going first as goals from Kahle Shaner and Greg Gaetano put them up 2-0 after seven minutes of play. Susquehanna retaliated with two of their own, and things were once again even going into the second period. Virginia Wesleyan was able to regain their two-goal lead in the second and would trade goals with SU over the final six minutes, earning them a 5-3 lead going into halftime. In the second half, things continued to be a battle as every time it looked like the Marlins were pulling away, the River Hawks would come creeping back in. With under three minutes left in regulation, VWU owned a three-goal lead but Susquehanna was able to force overtime, scoring the game-tying goal in with 17 seconds to go. Eight different Marlins registered a goal, led by Joey Rayman's three. Jason Thibeault, Sheirburn and Castillo all finished with two while Gaetano, Shaner, Brady Morrison and Trevor Lalonde all tucked away one. Gaetano would finish with three helpers as well. Kyle Leeming had a tremendous game between the pipes, recording a season-high 23 shots. Men's lacrosse will return to action at 2 p.m. on Sunday as the team heads to Roanoke for an ODAC showdown.
