The Elmira College men's lacrosse team was dealt a 14-4 setback in its 2020 season-opener on the road against the Hawks of SUNY Paltz on Friday afternoon. Three different players scored at least one goal for the Soaring Eagles (0-1), led by second-year attackman Sam Shaw '22 with two goals. Sam Crary '23 and Cameron Lambert '21 each netted one goal, the first of their respective careers. For the Hawks, Ryan Scully led all scorers with six points, five of which were earned on goals. Senior long poles Cam Brickey '20 and Austin Spiridilozzi '20 were busy on the defensive side of the field for Elmira. Brickey, who paced the Empire 8 Conference in caused turnovers in 2019, forced the Hawks into four turnovers and scooped four ground balls. Spiridilozzi posted a game-high six caused turnovers and added two ground balls to his total. In the crease, third-year netminder Jacob Mattice '21 faced a barrage of shots, as New Paltz finished with a 54-to-27 advantage in shots. The Canton, New York, who also finished first in the E8 a year ago in saves per game, racked up 19 stops while playing 54:58 between the posts. News and Notes Shaw, Elmira's leading returning scorer, paced the team with two goals. Crary and Lambert each deposited their first career goals for the Soaring Eagles. Spiridilozzi tied a single-game career-high with six caused turnovers on defense. Brickey gathered a team-high four ground balls, followed by Crary and David Keisler '20 with three apiece. James Mayer '20 logged two faceoff wins, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Mattice made a game-high 19 saves in goal for EC. Rafael Joseph '21, Ravi Chauma '21 and Ryan Durkee '23 joined Crary and Lambert by making their collegiate debuts on Friday. Up Next Elmira begins a four-game homestand on Monday, March 2, when the Soaring Eagles host future Empire 8 affiliate Keuka College on the turf at nearby Notre Dame High School at 7:00 p.m.
