Led by Paul Luongo's game-high six goals the Panthers of Plymouth State University defeated lacrosse by the final of 15-9 Saturday afternoon at James Cotter Field. THE BASICS UMass Boston 9, Plymouth State University 15 UMass Boston (2-13, 1-5 Little East Conference) Plymouth State University (5-6, 4-1 Little East Conference) HOW IT HAPPENED Luongo's team-leading performance moved the Panthers into sole possession of second place in the conference standings behind Keene State College. The Panthers wasted little time jumping out a solid lead as they scored three goals in the first three minutes of the opening stanza. They then tacked on five more in the second to head into the break with a 9-3 lead. UMB tried to cut into the deficit early in the third but could only found the back of the cage twice, while the Panthers were able to keep their distance thanks to four more goals. The final quarter saw UMB outscore the Panthers 3-2 but their comeback bid was too little too late. Conor Lenfest (Waltham, Mass.) had another solid day on the Beacons attack, with outshot the Panthers 53-30. The sophomore attackman registered a team-leading four goals, while also adding one assist. Jeremy Girard (Hinsdale, Mass.) also had a solid day with his four points (2g, 2a). Between the pipes Cameron Dixson (Wayland, Mass.) finished with 10 stops, while his Plymouth State counterpart Robert Porter made 14 saves to improve to 4-2 on the campaign. Having a career day by far for the Beacons was face-off specialist Jack Dobrzynski (East Greenwich, R.I.). On 25 face-off attempts, Dobrzynski posted 18 wins to lead all midfielders. He also registered 12 ground balls, which was a career high for Dobrzynski and season-best for any UMB player. Tom Redmond (Scituate, Mass.) was also consistent with his 2-for-3 day. BY THE NUMBERS With the loss Panthers have now won three straight over the Beacons The win marked Plymouth States first win on the harbor campus since the 2016 season Lenfest now sits just 13 points shy of his 100th career and he currently needs 45 goals for his 100th as well On the day UMB finished 1-for-5 on man-up attempts, while the Panthers were 2-for-5 The Beacons finished 20-for-28 on face-off attempts, which was a season-best The Beacons were 17-for-22 on clear attempts and combined nine caused turnovers WHO'S NEXT The Beacons will travel to Southern Maine on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. conference game.
