Senior Jake Burns (Salem, N.H.) scored four goals and added a pair of assists for six points to lead Plymouth State to a 12-8 Little East Conference men’s lacrosse victory over UMass Dartmouth Saturday morning at Cressy Field. The visiting Panthers (7-6, 6-1 LEC) overcame an early 2-1 deficit by scoring five unanswered goals (including a hat trick from Burns) to build a 6-3 advantage at the break, but the host Corsairs (7-9, 4-4 LEC) closed back to within one on third quarter markers from junior Mike Rizzo (Bridgewater, Mass.) and freshman Griffin Wiencek (Sherwood, Ore.). Plymouth State took control of the contest with six unanswered tallies in a nine minute stretch, as sophomore Connor Delea (Manchester, N.H.) collected two of those goals that helped the Panthers extend their edge to 12-5 with 6:35 remaining and ice their triumph. Delea finished with a hat trick and an assist for four points on the day for Plymouth State, which received two tallies from junior Chuck Harrington (Walpole, Mass.) along with a marker and three helpers off the stick of senior Paul Luongo (Northboro, Mass.) Senior Casey Elkins (Stow, Mass.) added a goal and two assists for the Panthers, who also received a tally and a helper from senior Chris Waterbury (Clinton, Conn.). Rizzo finished with four goals and an assist for five points in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which received three helpers from junior Donovan Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.). Sophomores Tim Jordan (Sandwich, Mass.) and Sawyer Gibbons (Sandwich, Mass.) joined freshman Kevin Swenson (Ipswich, Mass.) in netting single tallies for the Corsairs, who received an assist off the stick of sophomore Josh Souza (Sandwich, Mass.). Sophomore Robert Porter (Groveland, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with a 19-save effort for Plymouth State, while junior Ted McCaffery (Pepperell, Mass.) made 16 stops in the setback for UMass Dartmouth. The Panthers outshot the Corsairs by a 42-39 margin overall (28-27 on goal) and held a 13-11 advantage in the face-off circle for the contest. UMass Dartmouth has earned a berth in next week’s Little East Conference championships, as the Corsairs will play a quarterfinal round match on Tuesday. Plymouth State closes out its regular season on Sunday afternoon by heading to Mansfield, Conn. to take on Eastern Connecticut in its Little East regular season finale beginning at Noon. Complete league tournament pairings will be announced by the conference office on Sunday evening.
