. - The Neumann University men's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking non-conference defeat in overtime on Wednesday afternoon, falling in the extra session by a score of 10-9 to visiting Goucher College. Brendan Risley was outstanding in goal with 17 saves on the day, eclipsing the 600 save mark in his career. Colin Blake carried the offense in the loss, recording four goals and two assists for six points. Jack Newswanger won 14-of-21 face-offs on the day and also picked up a team-high 14 ground balls. The first frame would highlight how evenly matched the two teams were on the afternoon, as they traded goals back and forth throughout the opening 15 minutes. Goucher tallied first 1:25 into the contest, but Blake answered right back for the Knights off a feed from Wyatt Belotti at 10:22 to knot things up at 1-1. The Gophers would answer back with two of the next three markers, sandwiching another Blake goal with two of their own to take a 3-2 lead with 5:48 left to play. As the game moved to the final minute of the period though, the hosts found another level. Neumann leveled the matchup with a goal from Max Nice with 32 seconds left to play, then took its first lead off a howitzer to the top corner of the net from Eric Conlon just 16 seconds later to make it 4-3 Knights heading to the second. Despite the late first quarter magic, the second stanza would be all Goucher. The visitors outshot Neumann by a count of 20-4 in the frame, scoring four times to retake the lead. The scoreline could have been worse were it not for Risley, who came up huge several times in the quarter as he moved past the 600 save mark in his career. Blake registered the lone goal for the Knights in the period with 1:41 left in the half, but the hosts would find themselves down by a score of 7-5 at the break. Blake continued his dominant day on attack to open the third, cutting the Goucher lead to one at 8-7 with his fourth goal of the afternoon just 2:24 after halftime. The Knights would get no closer in the frame though, as the Gophers struck back with two tallies midway through the period to take a 9-6 advantage into the fourth quarter. Neumann saved its best quarter of the contest for when it mattered most, hunkering down on defense as it completely shut down a previously potent Goucher offense. The Knights received yeoman's work from defenders Alex Rucci, John Giovinazzo, Brett McLaughlin and Canon Coyle, who helped Risley completely shutout the Gophers in the frame. Neumann would also receive some clutch goals from its attack on its way back into the game. Eric Conlon rifled another shot by the Goucher goalie to bring the Knights back to within a pair at 9-7 early in the quarter, then McLaughlin bounced a shot off the crossbar and into the net on a man-up advantage with 4:25 left to make it 9-8 and set up a frenzied finish. Goucher continued to lead until late in the period, but the hosts would not be denied. With just over a minute left to go in the matchup, Drew Conlon found the back of the net off a feed from Blake to complete the Neumann comeback and make it 9-9. Newswanger would earn the Knights a chance to win in regulation with a key late face-off win, but two Neumann shots went just wide as the game moved to overtime deadlocked at nine apiece. Newswanger again set the Knights up for a potential winning goal in the extra session with his 14th draw win of the day, but again the hosts could not capitalize. Neumann had a good look saved, setting up Goucher for their own opportunity to win the contest. After a successful clear and a time-out, the Gophers set up a perfect play at the 1:33 mark of overtime. A Goucher player finally fired a ball past Risley and the visitors went home with the nail-biting 10-9 victory. Neumann (5-2) will remain at home this weekend for another non-conference game when Elmira College comes to town on Saturday, March 14th. Game-time is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
