The #19 Griffins hosted #6 Mercy College in a top 20 battle at DSG Field in Greensburg on Sunday afternoon. After trailing 8-2 at the half, the Griffins scored five straight goals to cut the lead to one but Mercy was able to hold the lead and hold on for a 10-8 win over the Griffins. SHU falls to 4-4 overall while the Mavericks improve to 5-1 on the season. Andy Davis scored with 10:12 to play in the first quarter to tie the contest at one in the early portion of the game. Mercy then scored the final three goals of the period to take a 4-1 lead into the second quarter. The Mavs scored two man up goals late in the period as they took advantage of a non releasable penalty on the Griffins. The Mavs kept the Griffins off the scoreboard for most of the second quarter as they were able to build their lead to 7-1. The Griffins finally got on the scoreboard with 1:20 to play in the half when Jeremy Sforzo scored. Mercy closed the half with a goal with six seconds to play as they led 8-2 at the half. The third quarter belonged to the Griffins as they outshot the Mavs by a 14-6 margin. Seton Hill was able to cut the Mercy lead in half in the quarter with two goals. Layne Harich buried both goals for the Griffins as SHU entered the fourth quarter with a ton of momentum and trailed by an 8-4 margin. The Griffins came out of the gates flying in the fourth quarter scoring twice in the first three minutes of the quarter. David St Clair scored with 14:09 left in the half and McGarity Harper picked up a Mercy turnover and put it into an empty net for a man up goal with 13:06 to play as SHU trailed 8-6. Thomas Hanulak scored at the 7:31 mark of the quarter to trim the lead to just one. The Mavs won the next faceoff and were able to push their lead back to two at the 6:32 mark of the quarter. Two Griffin turnovers on their next two possessions were costly as Mercy took advantage and increased their lead to 10-7 with 4:53 to play. After a faceoff win, Hanulak finished off a Harich pass to cut the lead to 10-8 with 4:17 left. SHU had a turnover on their next possession and could not take advantage of a late Mercy penalty as the Mavs were able to run out the clock. Harich led the Griffins with two goals and an assist. Hanulak finished with two goals. St Clair and Sforzo each added a goal and assist. Logan Gray was 12-20 in faceoffs. Gray and Christian Krauch each had four ground balls to lead SHU.
