An eight-goal halftime deficit was too much to overcome on Thursday afternoon for the Castleton University men's lacrosse team, as the Spartans fell by a final score of 10-7 to Plattsburgh State at Dave Wolk Stadium. Castleton (2-4) outscored the Cardinals (2-4) by a 6-1 margin in the second half, but Plattsburgh built a 9-1 lead before the halftime break to withstand the Spartans' offensive surge over the final 30 minutes. Plattsburgh outshot Castleton 41-23 on the day, while Castleton controlled the face-off circle, winning 12-of-20. Both sides collected 28 ground balls and turned it over 20-plus times, while Castleton was 15-for-19 clearing. The Cardinals were 16-of-24 on clear attempts. Jason Sedell had a four-point day on three goals and an assist, while Cameron Russell scored twice for the Spartans. Tom Pardew and Connor Rider added goals for Castleton, while Tyler Crowningshield and Colin Clark had assists. Maxx Ingison shouldered the loss, stopped six shots with nine goals against in one half of action, while Brandon Myron made six saves on seven shots in the second half. Jake Carroll notched a hat trick for the Cardinals, while seven others scored one goal each. Dilon Smith added two points on a goal and an assist. Christian Bassi earned the win in goal as four goalies split time for the Cardinals in the contest. Plattsburgh jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first 10-plus minutes of action as Daniel Bonafede and Christopher Wider scored before Smith made it a 3-0 game for the Cardinals. Russell stopped the run for the Spartans with an unassisted score with just 53 seconds left in the first, making it 3-1. The Cardinals dominated the second quarter, scoring six times—three of which came from the stick of Carroll—en route to taking a 9-1 lead into the halftime break. After more than nine minutes of scoreless action to open the third quarter, Sedell netted his first goal of the game with Castleton a man up to make it 9-2, before scoring again three minutes later to cut the score to 9-3. After a Jack Mullen score put Plattsburgh ahead 10-3, Castleton rattled off four straight goals in the last 16-plus minutes of play. Pardew found the back of the cage with 1:13 to play in the third quarter, before Rider scored with 5:45 to play in the final frame to make it 10-5. Sedell capped the hat trick with 2:17 to play, pulling Castleton within four, and Russell buried a pass from Crowningshield with just four seconds on the clock to give the game its final score of 10-7. Castleton opens Little East Conference play on Saturday at noon with a road contest at UMass-Dartmouth.
