. - Pat Spencer tied the Loyola University Maryland single-game record for points, tallying four goals and eight assists on Saturday, leading the ninth-ranked Greyhounds to a 15-9 Patriot League victory over the U.S. Naval Academy. Spencer matched the 12 points put up by Gary Hanley in an April 25, 1979 game over Morgan State University. Spencer's 12 are the second-most in Patriot League history and are the most by a Loyola player since the Greyhounds moved to NCAA Division I in 1982. The 12 points are also tied for the most in a game this season by an Division I player this season, matching the total put up by the Albany's Connor Fields earlier this season. Jay Drapeau and Aidan Olmstead each scored four goals for Loyola (5-2 overall, 3-0 Patriot League). Drapeau's tally matched his career-best, while Olmstead set a new high. Loyola used a 4-0 run to start the second quarter, a stretch in which Spencer had a goal and three assists. He fed Alex McGovern for an extra-man goal with 5:44 left in the half, putting the Greyhounds up 5-3, but the Midshipmen scored the last two goals of the half to tie the score at 5-5 going into the break. The Greyhounds dominated the third quarter, though, scoring five in a row before Navy (4-4, 3-1) scored with four seconds left in the frame. Drapeau opened the scoring in the second half, dodging from goal-line extended on the left before tap-dancing on the crease to score 59 seconds into the third. Spencer then tallied what would be his second of four goals at 9:32. P.J. Brown ran in from the box with the ball through the right alley, feeding Spencer below goal-line on the same side for a one-on-one chance with Navy goalkeeper Ryan Kern. Spencer then assisted on an Olmstead goal at 7:38 after the Loyola defense blocked three Navy shots, and Alex Johnson came away with a ground ball after the third. Spencer slowed transition and then completed the break with a pass to Olmstead rolling the crease for his third of the game. Olmstead triggered the next Greyhounds goal, as he had a hard shot saved by Kern only to see if fall in front of the goal. Kevin Lindley was there to grab the ground ball and score over Kern's shoulder, pushing Loyola up 9-5. Loyola looked to play for the final goal in the quarter as Spencer was alone at `X,' and he fed Drapeau crashing down the right for a one-timer with 12.2 on the clock. Navy, however, tallied a goal just over eight seconds later as Joe Varello won the faceoff and flipped a pass through traffic to Jeff Durden, and he bounced in a 15-yard shot to get Navy within four, 10-6, going into the final period of regulation. The Greyhounds came back with two goals to start the fourth quarter as Olmstead held his dodge on the left side, finally turning back to the right for a goal from eight yards out at 13:18, one of just five unassisted tallies Loyola had on the day. Spencer then hit Peter Swindell running out of the box, and Swindell fired a 10-yard high-to-low rocket that caromed through Kern's legs for a goal at 11:58. The Midshipmen, however, scored three in a row to get back within 12-9, the first coming 18 seconds after Swindell's goal when Varello won the draw and took it himself into the box for a goal. Less than two minutes later, a Loyola check dislodged the ball from a Navy stick, but Chris Hill was in front of the crease to pick it up and score at 10:07, drawing the game to a four-goal spread, 12-8. Hill's goal came with a flag down, and the Midshipmen were on extra-man after winning the faceoff. Ryan Wade threw a pass to a curling Christian Daniel, and Daniel scored on a jumper from inside 10 yards to make it 12-9 with 9:21 on the clock. Navy took possession on the ensuing faceoff, but Ryan McNulty intercepted a Midshipmen pass, and Spencer found Drapeau on the close left side for a low-to-high rip at 7:33, breaking Navy's 3-0 run. The Midshipmen again gained possession on the restart, but Foster Huggins had one of his five caused turnovers, and the Greyhounds cleared to the offensive end. Loyola burned time off the clock before the 30-second timer was put on, and Brown then sent a pass to Spencer on the low left for a sidearm rip that made it 14-9 Loyola with 4:30 to play. Spencer scored his last goal of the game in highlight fashion, again maneuvering with the timer on to send a backhanded and underhanded attempt past Kern from eight yards out on the right with 39 ticks left. Navy outshot the Greyhounds, 44-33, but Jacob Stover made 12 saves in goal for the Greyhounds. He was particularly effective in the first quarter as the Midshipmen had an 18-9 advantage in shots. The Midshipmen built a 3-1 lead as Wade scored to open the game and Jack Ray tallied a pair after an Olmstead score, but Stover had seven saves in the frame, to hold the Greyhounds close. Loyola is back in action with its final regular-season non-conference game of the year on Wednesday, March 21, when it plays at Georgetown University in a 3 p.m. game.
