The Marymount University men's lacrosse team used a 14-goal second half to cruise past Wesley College and into the Atlantic East Conference semifinals with a 17-5 decision on Saturday afternoon at Long Bridge Park. Paced by nine points by sophomore Clark Akers, a perfect day at the faceoff by senior Christian Lutz, and a solid defensive front by the Saints that caused 13 turnovers, Marymount throttled its way through the first round over the Wolverines. Akers finished with three goals and six assists, while Lutz went 25-for-25 at the 'x'. With 19 ground balls off the faceoff wins, Lutz became the single-season program leader for the Saints with a 150. He breaks a record that was set back in 1994 by Garth Little, who tallied 136. A tight first half where the Saints saw themselves only leading 3-2 at the break was quickly eliminated with a five-goal stretch to open the third quarter, blowing the game open to an 8-2 advantage. The Wolverines broke their scoring silence with a man-up finish at the 9:02 mark before Marymount fired off two more goals to reach double figures. In the fourth, the Saints left no doubt with a 7-1 15-minute stretch, including three goals through 2.5 minutes. Senior Rex Rizzuti had a five-point performance with two goals and three assists, while sophomore Jonah Mackiewicz and freshman Riley Scales put away hat tricks. Senior Grey Clarkson earned the win in the net with seven saves in just under 55 minutes of play. The Saints advance to the semifinals on Wednesday, May 1, traveling to second-seeded Gwynedd Mercy University. Time is to be announced.
