Phoenix Hines registered his record-setting 54th caused turnover of the season, while the offense put on a 60-minute showcase as the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team advanced to the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament with a 20-6 victory in a first-round battle on a sun-soaked Saturday afternoon at Captains Field. Making his mark on the defensive end, Hines forced three turnovers against the Eagles, giving him 54 for the season. That moves him past Brandon Moloney's previous program record of 53 set during the 2016 campaign. Equally dominant on the defensive side, Drew Cornell registered a team-high six caused turnovers, which equaled the sixth-highest single-game total in CNU history. With that performance, he also became the first Captain to eclipse 100 in his career. The senior standout has now caused 101 turnovers during his decorated tenure. While Cornell and Hines were making history on the defensive end, the CNU attack was putting on a clinic. The team established a new single-game record for goals in a postseason contest after blasting 20 against the Eagles. That topped the 19-goal assault against Southern Virginia during the first round of the 2016 CAC Tournament. On an individual level, Dylan Rice notched six points, including four goals. His final tally marked his 50th of the season, making him the first Captain to register a pair of 50-goal campaigns. Meanwhile, Jackson Deal handed out three assists, while Brady Altobello added a hat-trick. Overall, 12 different Captains recorded at least one point, including six multi-goal efforts. With the win, Christopher Newport improves to 12-6 on the season and advances to the CAC semifinals for a bout at Salisbury on Wednesday. The setback drops Mary Washington to 7-11 overall. After the Eagles managed to open the scoring less than a minute into the game, CNU responded with a lethal assault. Rice cut off a clear attempt by the visitors before Glenn Doering came through with the equalizer after driving a shot into the low left corner of the cage. Just over a minute later, Spencer Shipman found himself isolated one-on-one with a defender. Rolling back and forth looking for an inch of space, the junior eventually found a sliver of daylight and drove home the squad's second goal. Pushing the lead, Rice split a double-team and brushed off a hit from a third defender before collecting his first goal. Later, Alex Horgan found himself alone along the right pipe for his first tally before Miles Collins took advantage of a quick transition and caught UMW playing 6-on-4. With numbers, the second-year standout buried a bullet to snatch a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Still motoring along in the second stanza, Altobello flashed his stick skills after faking a pair of passes before taking the shot himself for his first goal. Minutes later, Rice shook off a low blow by a defender with a laser from the left side. After the Eagles were hit with a penalty for that play, Horgan made them pay with a man-up missile off a skip pass from Deal. Staring at an 8-1 deficit, the visitors broke CNU's surge with their own man-up goal before the Captains responded with another back-breaking rally. Showing no ill effects from the hit he took earlier in the period, Rice set up a goal by Lucas Barry before slamming home a pair of his own. Meanwhile, the Captains also flashed their range. Will Stockhausen bullied a defender before depositing from deep. Moments later, Shipman elevated and fired over an Eagle from long-range to snatch a 13-2 lead with four minutes left in the half. Putting a solid punctuation mark on the period, Doering added a rocket on the run before Barry dunked over the goalie with just seconds remaining to gain a 13-goal advantage. With the momentum firmly planted on the CNU sideline, the Captains continued their assault in the second half. After Scott McAneney brushed aside a pair of early rallies by the Eagles, he helped jumpstart another quick transition tally as Deal capitalized on the other end. Later, Altobello capped off his hat-trick with back-to-back daggers along the left pipe to snatch an 18-2 edge. Meanwhile, catching up on the defensive side of the ball, Christopher Newport blanketed the field. After Mary Washington won a faceoff, Aidan FitzGerald hunted the FOGO and blasted the stick right out of his hands with a huge trail-check. Later, the downers held up after CNU was hit with a pair of penalties, including a clutch save by Andrew Clark. Entering the fourth quarter with a 16-goal lead, the Captains put an end to the festivities with two final tallies in the last period. First, Griffin Hanes flashed some fancy footwork and danced past two defenders before snapping off the squad's 19th goal. Later, working against the flow of the defense, Thomas Mark dished back to Jordan Lee, who hammered home the final nail. Overall, Christopher Newport out-shot Mary Washington, 46-32, while the Eagles won 24 of the game's 29 faceoffs and held a 45-31 edge in ground balls. Between the pipes, McAneney, Clark, Matt Scott, and Thomas Brackett all made saves and finished the contest with 12 total stops. Meanwhile, Cornell secured a team-high four ground balls to go along with his six caused turnovers.
