The second-seeded Salisbury University men's lacrosse team cruised to an opening round victory over seventh seed Southern Virginia University in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday afternoon, 27-9. The Sea Gulls (17-1) got solid performances from multiple members of the maroon and gold, including a career-best outing by junior defensive midfielder Brad Greik, who finished the day with three points and tallied the first multi-goal game of his career. Greik netted his first marker of the contest with just under seven minutes left to play in the opening frame. After the Knights (5-13) opened the scoring less than two minutes into the contest, the maroon and gold responded with a 7-0 run of their own. After a Salisbury turnover and successful Southern Virginia clear, Greik turned defense into offense by scooping up one his two groundballs for the day and racing downfield to push the Sea Gulls' advantage to 5-1. Southern Virginia, however, began to rally back in the second quarter, scoring two times in the opening three minutes to cut the Salisbury lead to just three, 7-4. Off of a caused turnover by Matt O'Callaghan, Greik scooped up another groundball and once again raced downfield and finished off his second unassisted effort of the day to stop the Knights' 3-0 run and help spark a 4-0 run by the home team, which Greik had a hand in capping as well when he assisted one of Cross Ferrara's team-best five goals to give the Sea Gulls an 11-5 lead at the break. After a back-and-forth third quarter that saw four goals from each team, Salisbury pulled away in the fourth as the Sea Gulls netted a season-best 12 goals to push the score final. Nine different players found the back of the net in the final 15 minutes of action, including defenseman Brad Apgar, who netted his first marker of the season. Brett Malamphy was once again dominant at the faceoff X, winning a season and career-best 26 faceoffs for a win percentage of 92.8. Malamphy added in a team-high 21 groundballs as well, which marked another season high for the senior faceoff specialist. Salisbury returns to action on Wednesday, May 1 when it hosts third-seeded Christopher Newport University in a rematch of last season's CAC semifinal round. A game time has yet to be announced.
