STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The No. 1-seeded Stony Brook women's lacrosse team will compete for its seventh-straight America East tournament championship on Saturday after topping No. 4-seeded UMBC, 17-5, in the semifinals. The victory marked the team's 10th in a row and 10th game of the season scoring 15-plus goals. QUOTING HEAD COACH Joe Spallina "It's great for us to win and move on. I think that there are a lot of things we can take from this game. I think in playoff time and the postseason we have a different set of emotions. There's players realizing that this could be the last time they take the field if things don't break a certain way. There's not a next-schedule game, you have to win one to earn one so I think players sometimes handle those expectations a little differently. I thought we came out tight and I thought we got our bearings straight about halfway through the first half." HIGHLIGHTS Stony Brook scored 10 in a row in the first half to jump out to an 11-1 halftime lead. The Seawolves outscored UMBC 6-4 in the second to preserve its advantage. Ally Kennedy (North Babylon, N.Y.) was once again on a tear, tying her career high in points (10) from six goals and four assists. She also added in five draw controls, two groundballs and one caused turnover. Kennedy now has 88 points on the season (74G, 14A). Taryn Ohlmiller (Islip, N.Y.) and Keri McCarthy (Hauppauge, N.Y.) each recorded hat tricks with McCarthy also controlling five draws. Nicole Barretta (Exton, Pa.) was also a multi-goal scorer, netting two, while Sarah Pulis (Baldwin, N.Y.), Sabrina Tabasso (Lower Merion, Pa.) and Rayna Sabella (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) also got Stony Brook on the board. Goalkeeper Anna Tesoriero (Huntington, N.Y.) made four saves on the day and is only one away from tallying the 500th of her career. NOTES This marks the 15th game this year that Kennedy has scored at least three goals in. In program history, she is now sixth in single-season goals (74), 10th in single-season points (88), tied for second in single-season draw controls (106), fourth in career goals (161), seventh in career points (209), ninth in career ground balls (118) and sixth in career draw controls (177). McCarthy is now fifth in single-season draw controls (70) and Tesoriero is tied with Kennedy for the ninth position in career ground balls (118). Stony Brook had the advantage in shots (35-16), ground balls (25-10) and draw controls (15-9). Stony Brook is 11-8 all-time against UMBC, with its 11 victories all coming in a row. NEXT UP Stony Brook will face UAlbany in the America East Championship this Saturday. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. at LaValle Stadium.
