Sophomore Kerry Gerety put on a show in her first ever MAAC postseason game, putting up an eight point game with six goals and two assists to carry the third-seeded Siena Saints to a 16-12 win over the sixth-seeded Canisius Golden Griffins on Saturday afternoon. The Saints now advance to the MAAC Semifinals to take on the #2 seed, the Monmouth Hawks in Fairfield, Connectiucut. With the win, Siena (11-6) have tied a single-season program record for wins, tying the mark set by the Saints in 2005. The win gives Siena their second ever postseason win in program history and first at home at Hickey Field, with the other coming in 2005 as well. The Green and Gold also saw numerous single-season records fly, as Gerety broke the draw controls record, eclipsing Julia Sirianni's previous mark of 89 in a season from 2013. Senior Sammy Horton set the new program record for win by a goalie with 11 in a single season. As for MAAC game records, Gerety now owns the single-game postseason record for points, goals, and assists, while tying Siena's previous records for draw controls and free position goals. As a team, the Saints broke new MAAC game records in goals, shots on goal, draw controls, and free position goals. The Green and Gold were not only led by Gerety's eight point performance, by junior captain Annie Brennan also had a standout game with four goals and an assist for five points on the day. Sophomore Julia Pelcher also scored three times, while sophomore Nicole McNeely and freshman Mary Soures each collected two points. McNeely would score twice, while Soures put up a goal and an assist. In goal, Horton would make five saves in the win. Leading Canisius was Jen Reninger, who scored twice and tossed out two assists for a team-high four points. Four other Griffs scored a trio of points, with Marissa Malvaso, Katie Smolensky, Jourdan Roemer, and Bryar Cummings each putting up three points. Megan Hoffman and Miranda Malvaso each scored for the Griffs, while in goal Lauren Gilbert made five saves in the loss. Things got going in a hurry, as the Saints would score early and often in the first half. McNeely opened the scoring in the first half, scoring off a free position just 1:24 into the gamer. By the 11:45 mark in the half, Siena had opened up an 8-2 lead, and Gerety had collected a hat trick. The Green and Gold would score three more times before the half to make it an 11-5 lead. Gerety would have four goals and a pair of assists at the halfway point. Gerety would score to open the second half as the Saints gained their largest lead of the day at seven. As the Saints let off the pedal offensively, the Griffs began a second half comeback scoring three of the next four goals in the game to cut the lead to 13-8. But it would be Gerety once again there to shut the door, scoring her sixth of the game, backed up by a goal from Pelcher at the 5:40 mark to bring the Saints lead back out to seven. After both sides traded goals within 40 seconds of each other, the score stood at 16-9 with 3:07 to play. Canisius would score three goals in the final three minutes to make a run, but the Saints would hang on 16-12. Siena outshot Canisius by a slim margin, 29-25 on the game. The Griffs won the ground battle, topping the Saints 15-11 over the game, with 12 coming in the second half. The Saints will return to action this Thursday, May 2 when they head to Fairfield for the MAAC Semifinals. They will take on the second-seeded Monmouth Hawks at 6 p.m.
