- A back-and-forth battle between California and Arizona State was decided with back-to-back goals from Kirsten Swanson to ice the game and propel the Golden Bears past the Sun Devils, 12-8, in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament Thursday night from Pape Field on the campus of tournament-host Oregon. The No. 4 seed Bears will now face No. 1 seed and 17th-ranked USC in the semifinals tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. Swanson's game-high five points paved the way for the Bears' first win in a conference tournament since 2010. In addition, for the fifth consecutive year, Cal has increased its season win total from the previous year, every year in the Brooke Eubanks' era. The Bears improved to 7-11 overall on Thursday. The Bears boasted seven different goal scorers. After Swanson's four goals, Caroline Corzel and Marisa Kuberra each scored twice. Nikki Zaccaro added three points on one goal and two assists. Zaccaro was strong on both ends of the field, adding three ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover to her stat totals. Susie Ropp, Ashley Ward and Cameron Gordon each found the back of the net once, while Ropp and Gordon also recorded assists. Eliza Christman tallied an assist to round out the Cal scoring. Strong on the draws all year, Lizabanks Campagna led the way with a game-high six draws. She also recorded two ground balls and caused a turnover. Jenny Wilkens made seven saves and collected four ground balls. Already the school's career leader in ground balls, she is one shy of the program's single-season record. Through the contest's first 15 minutes, the Bears and Sun Devils traded goals. Cal took its first lead of the game with Gordon's tally at the 14:13 mark. The Bears scored the final three goals of the first half in the span of six minutes to take a 6-3 lead into the locker room. Arizona State took early momentum after halftime with two quick goals to cut the Bears' lead down to one. The Sun Devils never regained the lead, but kept hanging around, answering every time Cal scored. Finally, Swanson ended any doubt of which team would be moving on to the next round when she tallied back-to-back goals in the final minutes of regulation to give Cal a three-goal lead with just under three minutes left on the clock. Corzel later added her second goal for good measure, and the Bears celebrated their third victory over the Sun Devils in 2019.
