Tied 6-6 at the half, third-seeded Army West Point opened the second half with four straight goals, on the way to downing the No. 6 seed Lehigh women's lacrosse team, 12-9 in the Patriot League Quarterfinals on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks used a 5-1 first-half surge to take their first and only lead of the game at 5-4. Senior Kellie Gough, junior Sondra Dickey and sophomore Hannah Cermack each scored two goals to lead the offense while sophomore Samantha Sagi stood tall in goal, making 12 saves, including a number of spectacular stops early in the second half to keep the Mountain Hawks within striking distance. "Army was really resilient today," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "They made big plays when they needed to. Every time we rallied and got back on our game, they had a good answer. Congratulations to them; they're deserving." Gough and Dickey each added an assist for three points for the day. Dickey also had three draw controls to give her 169 for her career, tying Kayleen Kelly's school record before Dickey even begins her senior campaign. Senior Courtney Henig, junior Autumn Ryan and sophomore Julianne Puckette scored the Mountain Hawks' other goals. Freshman Jenna Garden led the defense with three caused turnover while two other freshmen also had two apiece, Emma McGillis and Claire Keller. Army opened a quick 3-0 advantage just 6:06 into the contest, but Lehigh answered with the next two goals and five of the next six. Five different goal scorers helped give the Mountain Hawks a 5-4 advantage, capped off by Ryan collecting a loose ball in front of the cage and immediately scoring with 10:45 remaining in the first half. "Some of the shots we took today weren't typical for us," said Redfern. "They weren't high percentage shots. But in that spell when we were able to close the gap, it was a little bit better." Following Ryan's goal, the Black Knights scored the next two, but a Dickey free-position goal with 18 seconds left in the first half knotted the score at six after 30 minutes of play. After Army opened its 10-6 second-half lead, the Mountain Hawks tried for one last rally. Lehigh got three goals over the final 8:09, beginning with Cermack's second to snap more than a 22-minute scoreless drought. Gough and Puckette added goals down the stretch, but Army always had an answer and the Black Knights held on for the 12-9 final. Final shots were 32-22 in favor of Army while the Black Knights held an 18-11 edge in groundballs and 15-8 advantage in draw controls. After just 10 combined turnovers in the first half (six for Army, four for Lehigh), the second half saw 25 (14 for the Black Knights, 11 for the Mountain Hawks). Army goalkeeper Maddie Burns made 10 saves across Sagi's 12 stops. Lehigh ends its season winning four of its last five games. Standing 0-5 in the Patriot League, the Mountain Hawks fought back to win four straight and qualify for their sixth straight Patriot League Tournament, capped off by a dominant 20-3 win over American on Friday. "I'm proud of them," said Redfern. "They gave themselves an opportunity here today. Unfortunately, we just didn't make enough plays."
