- Hosting a Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal game for the fourth time, the Boston University women's lacrosse team battled back from a five-goal deficit, but couldn't take the lead as it saw its season end at the hands of Colgate, 14-13, at Nickerson Field. The Raiders used a 6-0 run between the end of the first half and the start of the second half to stake a 13-8 advantage with 15:52 to play. BU reduced the gap to two after back-to-back goals, but Colgate surged back ahead by four after a 3-0 run. The Terriers cut the gap to one twice thanks to scores from Kaitiln Belval and Hannah Kenneally, with Kenneally's coming with 5:33 left in regulation. The Terriers had a chance to tie the game with a free position shot with 1:35 to play, but Colgate's Samantha Croston came up with her 10th save of the game and the Raiders ran out the clock. Despite the loss, BU finished with an 11-win season for the first time since the 2012 campaign. How It Happened Kailey Conry forced a turnover on Colgate's opening clear attempt and found Emily Vervlied in transition as the Terriers made the first dent on the scoreboard just under two minutes into action. Colgate caught the hot stick as it lined in three straight goals, all assisted by Tara Atkinson, to shift the momentum. BU answered with a 3-0 run of its own, as Kenneally struck twice, while Lexi Lewis also found the back of the net as the Terriers pull ahead by one at the halfway point in the first. The Raiders tied it up once again before Maddie MacMaster erupted for back-to-back strikes, putting the Terriers on top 6-4 with 7:13 left in the half. However, the Raiders exploded for another 3-0 in the final minutes of the half, including netting the go-ahead goal with seven seconds left to hold the scoreboard in its favor at the break, 7-6. Colgate's tandem Noelle Patterson and Danielle Van Calcar either scored or assisted on the next three goals, giving the Raiders a 10-6 lead five minutes into the second half. The Terriers worked the crease as its attack got back on its feet, as Vervlied netted her second goal of the game to snap the 6-0 Raider run. Makenzie Irvine dodged through Colgate's defense and slipped in her first score just inside the left post to make it a two-goal game with 21:36 to play. Once again, the Raiders had an answer pulling another 3-0 run to stake its largest lead of the game, 13-8. Makenzie Howe went for back-to-back goals, sending in feeds from Kenneally and Conry, while Conry worked from behind the cage to cut the deficit to two with just under 12 minutes left. Kaitlin Belval dodged past a Raider defender before slicing a shot into the upper 90, making it a one-goal game with 7:22 on the clock. Colgate and BU exchanged goals, with Kenneally's scoring her third goal of the day from her knees, keeping it a one-goal deficit with 5:33 to play. The Terriers won the ensuing draw controls, but turned it over, giving Colgate time to run the clock down. Bianca Smith came up with a huge save with 3:02 on the clock, but BU missed its final two shots as the Raiders held on for the upset. Game Notes BU held an 24-5 advantage in draw controls, led by nine from Mackenzie Howe, which set a new career high. Tonianne Magnelli was also dominant on the draw, coming away with six decisions. Conry finished the season with 55 assists, breaking her own single-season record of 54 set in 2017. Sunday marked the first time BU has lost in the quarterfinal round and its first home loss in the Patriot League Tournament. The Terriers now stand at 6-6 all-time in the tournament. The freshman duo of Kenneally and MacMaster combined for five of BU's nine points through the first 30 minutes.
