"I am really proud of the way the team fought for 60 minutes today," head coach Chris Feifs said. "Despite sloppy play on our part guys stepped up when we needed it most. Credit to JU for a really strong effort and taking advantage of their opportunities." With four goals this afternoon, MacKay has 126 career goals and has passed Drew Philie '13 for second all-time in program history. The Port Elgin, Ontario native needs just six points to become the third player to record 200 points in Green & Gold. Both teams found the back of the net often in the first quarter with Ben French opening the game's scoring halfway through the quarter. Mclean Chicquen scored with 1:31 remaining to cut the Vermont lead to 3-2, but Dawes Milchling scored in the final seconds of the quarter off of a pass from captain James Leary to give UVM a 4-2 lead at the first break. MacKay and Liam Limoges scored back-to-back goals early in the second quarter to push Vermont's lead to 6-3, but the Phins stormed back with goals from Chicquen, Shawn Ewert, and Mitchell Parker to tie the game at 6-6 with 5:30 remaining in the half. MacKay's second goal of the half came with 3:12 remaining and Vermont took a 7-6 lead into the half. Sophomore Nick Washuta made seven stops for UVM in the first 30 minutes. The third quarter saw a pair of goals from each team to make it a 9-8 game entering the fourth quarter. Limoges and French each tallied their second goals of the game. MacKay completed the hat trick to open the fourth quarter scoring and give Vermont a 10-8 lead with 12:09 to play. The Dolphins fought back again with goals from Ewert and Chicquen to tie the game at 10-10 with 7:11 to play in regulation. JU's Hunter Sells stopped a Charlie Cobb shot and grabbed the ground ball with 3:30 left to play to give the Phins possession. JU cleared into the UVM zone and called timeout with 2:39 remaining. JU managed to fire three shots towards Washuta coming out of the timeout, but all shots went wide. A final Dolphin timeout with 35 seconds remaining gave JU one last chance, but an Eric Applegate shot went wide as time expired. Charlie Erdmann won the most important faceoff of the game to start the extra period and Andrew Simeon grabbed his team-leading ninth ground ball of the game. Feifs called timeout 12 seconds into the OT period. Coming out of the huddle Vermont's Ian MacKay scored his second game-winning goal of the season with 3:35 remaining on the clock. "We were absolutely planning on putting the ball in #45's stick," Feifs added. "He is our offensive captain and leader and came up clutch to get his team the win." Vermont and Jacksonville both finished the game with 21 shots on goal. Washuta made 11 saves for UVM to get his sixth win of the season. Sells made 10 saves in the setback for JU. JU held the advantage in ground balls (41-29) and faceoffs (14-11). Erdmann was 9-for-22 at the X while saving his best for last. For the second straight game captain Leary took a draw for the Catamounts. With the victory, the Cats Win, Community Wins campaign and Vermont Mutual Insurance Group will donate another $100 to the Boys and Girls Club of Burlington, bringing this year's total to 108 wins and $10,800. Vermont makes it home debut next Thursday (Mar. 8) against Sacred Heart. The game is slated to begin at 12 p.m. at Virtue Field.
