The 17th-ranked and top-seeded Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-1 lead and cruised to a 15-3 victory over fifth-seeded Roanoke in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament held at Wilson Field on Friday afternoon.
Senior attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) scored five goals in the game, setting a new W&L record for career goals, breaking the former mark of 182 goals held by Matt Dugan '01. Witherell, already the all-time leading point-scorer (308), now has 186 goals across his four seasons.
Sophomore attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) opened the scoring just 52 seconds into the game, and brother, A.J., tallied the game's next two goals for a 3-0 W&L (14-4) lead with 2:11 left in the first quarter.
Roanoke (11-8) got on the board at the 13:37 mark of the second quarter on a goal by senior midfielder Matthew Lintner, but the Generals added four more goals scored by four different players for a 7-1 lead at the break.
Junior midfielder Jed Londrey (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) and Taylor Witherell both scored goals in the opening 38 seconds of the second half and the lead grew to 11-1 by the 8:51 mark of the third quarter. The Generals substituted freely from that point on in extending their winning streak to 10 straight.
W&L held a 54-29 advantage in shots, a 41-27 edge in ground balls and a 15-7 ledger on faceoffs.
A.J. Witherell paced the Generals in scoring, while Taylor Witherell posted two goals and one assist. Junior midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) logged one goal and three assists, and junior midfielder Thomas Zusi (Chester, N.J. / Pingry School) chipped in two goals as well. Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) played the opening 55:38 in goal and produced 13 saves with just three goals allowed. Junior Matt Lanigan (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Oratory Prep) played the final 4:22 and did not face a shot on goal.
Lindley scored two goals to lead the Maroons. Senior Ian Davies played 59:59 in goal for Roanoke, recording 20 saves.
Washington and Lee advances to Saturday's ODAC Championship game, where it will square off against either second-seeded Lynchburg or third-seeded Hampden-Sydney. Faceoff is slated for 7:00 pm.
