The Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse team's historic season came to a close on Saturday as the top-seeded Mountaineers were edged by second-seeded Wagner, 7-6, in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship Game at Waldron Family Stadium. The Mount rounds out the year at 16-3 overall, setting a program record for most wins in a season. The victory for Wagner (15-3) snapped the Mount's program-best 13-game win streak. The Seahawks will head to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year, and will find out their opponent during the NCAA selection show on Sunday at 8 p.m. Mount St. Mary's had three players named to the NEC All-Tournament Team: goalie Jillian Petito, midfielder Emily Davis and defender Kaitlyn Ridenour. Jordan Butler led the Mount with a pair of goals in the contest. Butler, who was named the NEC Offensive Player of the Year on Wednesday, finishes the year with 78 points, which is the most in a single-season in program history. The sophomore's 60 goals on the season are the second-most in Mount history, just four shy of Katelyn Catanese's record set during the 2008 campaign. Petito was outstanding in goal once again for the Mountaineers, making a season-high 17 saves in the tilt. Petito, who ranks second in the nation in both save percentage and goals against average, rounds out her career with the second-most wins in program history (30) and the third-most saves (504). The Mount's defensive unit registered its 15th game of the season holding its opponent to single-digit goals. Ridenour, the NEC Defensive Player of the Year, tallied a game-high three caused turnovers. Wagner was led by two goals apiece from Erin Kerstetter and Madeline Seims in the win. Kerstetter also added six draws and five ground balls. Goalie Kelsey Fee, who was named the Tournament MVP, posted an 11-save performance to collect her 14th win of the season. Wagner tallied the opening goal of the contest as Victoria Tucci found the back of the net just over two minutes in for her 23rd goal of the season. The Mountaineers were able to even the contest five minutes later on Jordan Groover's free-position tally, and they took their first lead at the 17:55 mark on Butler's first goal of the game. Emily Davis made it a two-goal Mount advantage with her 29th goal of the season midway through the half on another free-position attempt. Seims and Butler, the leading scorers for their respective teams, traded goals just 30 seconds apart, as the Mount remained in front by a pair heading under the 10-minute mark. The Seahawk offense got rolling late in the frame, as they scored the final three goals of the half to take a 5-4 advantage. Megan Drum, Kerstetter and Stephanie Falcone scored a goal apiece during the stretch. Both defenses shut things down through the early stages of the second half as neither team found the back of the net in the opening 14-plus minutes of action. With 15:11 on the clock, Groover sent a pass to Alayna Pagnotta off a free-position attempt, and Pagnotta quickly deposited it for the first score of the half, tying the game at 5-5. Under four minutes later, Kerstetter put the Seahawks back on top with her second goal of the contest. Seims followed with a free-position goal for her second of the tilt and 61st overall on the season, which increased the Wagner lead to 7-5 with 5:33 remaining. With just over two minutes left in the game, Beanie Colson picked up a loose ball in front of goal and beat Fee with a quick shot to bring the Mount back within one score, 7-6. Wagner had possession as the clock dipped under 20 seconds, but the Mount forced a key turnover and worked its way down field. The Mountaineers were fouled twice in transition, which took precious time off the clock, but they were able to get in scoring position the waning seconds. With just 0.6 seconds on the clock, Davis was fouled in the critical scoring area, resulting in a free-position attempt. Off the restart, Davis fired a shot, but Fee turned it away to preserve the 7-6 victory and the NEC Title for Wagner.
