University of Lynchburg's men's lacrosse team rolled into the third round of the NCAA Division III tournament Wednesday with a 15-5 drubbing of Transylvania on Shellenberger Field. It is the fifth time in the last seven years that the Hornets, currently ranked No. 19 in the nation, have won an NCAA tournament game. Senior attackmen Evan Lombardo (Franklin Park, N.J.) and Andrew Thomas (Roswell, Ga.) led the way for Lynchburg, each notching a hat trick in the game. Lombardo added a pair of assists, as did junior attackman Colin Dean (Havre de Grace, Md.), who scored twice as well. Junior attackman Trammel Robinson contributed a pair of goals and two ground balls, while senior long-stick midfielder Seamus McDonald (Far Hills, N.J.) anchored the defense with six ground balls. Senior goalie Patrick Cornelius (Potomac, Md.) made nine saves in the net. Lynchburg (14-6) dominated the face-off, as seniors Craig Koester (Wildwood, Mo.) and Bo Delaney (Marstons Mills, Mass.) combined to go 18-for-21 at the X. That advantage helped the Hornets start hot, scoring twice in the opening minute of play. Dean scored unassisted off the opening face just 46 seconds into the game, and Delaney won the ensuing face-off and scored 7 seconds later to put Lynchburg up 2-0. Just over 2 minutes later, Dean found Lombardo for the Hornets' next score, and Lynchburg cruised to a 7-0 lead after the first quarter of play. Goals from senior midfielder Rivington Lambert (Lake Wylie, S.C.), freshman attackman Kyle Lewis (Suwanee, Ga.) and senior midfielder Nick Willertz (Severn, Md.) extended Lynchburg's lead to 10-1 with 5:49 until halftime, but the Pioneers (14-5) scored twice late in the half to cut the deficit to 10-3 at the break. Thomas kicked off the Hornets' second-half scoring to complete his hat trick, and Lynchburg extended its lead to 13-3 after three quarters. Robinson and Lombardo put an exclamation point on the contest with goals in the final five minutes. Martin, a midfielder, was one of 10 players to earn a spot on the USILA's final weekly honor roll of the season. He helped 19th-ranked Lynchburg reach the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament title game for the sixth-straight season and assisted the Hornets in earning an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III tournament. Martin began the tournament with three caused turnovers and a ground ball in the Hornets' 20-11 elimination of Hampden-Sydney in the semifinal round, and he followed that with a goal, an assist and two ground balls in Lynchburg's loss to then-No. 17 Washington and Lee in the championship game. He has appeared in 18 games this season and become a key part of the Hornets' defensive midfield as the year has progressed. Martin has seven goals and two assists for Lynchburg this year to go with 13 ground balls and five caused turnovers. Lynchburg (13-6) will begin its 2019 NCAA tournament run with a 6 p.m. home contest against Transylvania (14-4) Wednesday, May 8.
