Elliott Johnson poured in a school-record six goals but visiting Chowan scored three goals in a five minute span late in the fourth to escape with a 19-16 win at Armstrong Stadium on Wednesday. Neither team had more than a three-goal lead throughout a game that saw Hampton set school records for goals scored (17), most combined goals (36) and most points (23) among others. The Pirates scored their first 13 goals in bunches as Elliott Johnson and Pierce Johnson closed the first quarter with goals 1:40 apart as Hampton trailed 3-2 after one. In the second, Josh Square, Melvin Scott, III and Preston Randolph tallied goals in a nearly three minute span of the second quarter to get Hampton its first lead at 5-4. Derian Williams-Sturdivant, Elliott Johnson and Jonathan Napier tallied the next set in a span of 2:25 late in the quarter to put Hampton back up 8-7. In the third, Elliott Johnson, Kendall Sapp, Square, Carter Boone and Napier scored the first five goals of the half as Hampton took a 13-10 lead. A goal with 28 seconds left in the third by Nick Lavoy of Chowan tied the game at 14-all. Elliott Johnson scored twice in a span of 2:44 early in the fourth, with his goal at 11 minutes leveling the game at 16-all. From there, Chowan scored three straight to take a 19-16 lead on another Lavoy tally with 4:59 left. Elliott Johnson put in his sixth goal with 91 seconds left, but Hampton couldn't get closer than the 19-17 final. Hampton (2-6) now goes to Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday to face Cleveland State at 1 pm.
