A late shot with a chance to equalize it in the final seconds sailed wide and the No. 12 Syracuse (7-6, 4-0 ACC) men's lacrosse team fell 11-10 to No. 11 Virginia (11-4, 1-3 ACC) in the ACC Semifinals. Stephen Rehfuss led the way with two goals and an assist, while Tucker Dordevic chipped in two of his own, but it wasn't enough to overcome a second half push that got the Cavaliers out to a late lead. The Orange came fast out of the gates, scoring four goals in the first quarter from four different scorers. Peter Dearth scored in transition to open the scoring right away less than a minute into action. Dearth posted a stellar defensive effort for Syracuse, collecting a career-high five ground balls. After two-straight UVA goals in the next 90 seconds, Pat Carlin found the back of the net for the Orange to pull even. Carlin also contributed an assist on the day on the ensuing 'Cuse goal, which was buried by David Lipka to put Syracuse up 3-2. Michael Kraus scored with 2:22 remaining in the frame as one of his five points on the day, to tie for the game-high with teammate Matt Moore. Rehfuss then scored a man-down goal with 44 ticks left in the frame to conclude a high-scoring first quarter and give the Orange a 4-3 lead at the first stoppage. From there, the scoring slowed down. UVA tallied both goals in the second from the sticks of Dox Aitken and Moore to give the Hoos the lead heading into the locker room at 5-4. Moore scored just 41 seconds into the third quarter to complete a three-goal run for Virginia, that ultimately served to be the difference in the contest. 11 more goals were scored from that point forward, but each tally was alternated by Syracuse and Virginia down the stretch. Brendan Bomberry, Dordevic and Kevin Hutchings would each find the back of the net in the third, with UVA taking a 9-7 lead into the final frame. Stephen Rehfuss scored a highlight reel around-the-world goal through traffic to pull Syracuse back within one again late, but with 1:36 to play in regulation, Mike D'Amario put the Cavaliers up 11-9. Seth DeLisle won the next faceoff and scored his first goal at Syracuse to pull the game to 11-10 with 1:27 remaining. 'Cuse then forced a turnover and had an opportunity to score with 24 seconds remaining, but the shot attempt sailed wide and UVA won the backup to seal the game. Virginia won the ground ball battle 37-35 and faceoffs 18-7 to control possession in the contest. The Orange return home next week for Senior Day, when the team hosts Colgate in the regular season finale. Tickets are available at Cuse.com/Tickets, for $10 for adults and $5 for youth (12 and under).
