University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse could not contain the offense of No. 11 Yale early and fell to the Bulldogs, 13-10, at Garber Field despite scoring the game's final six goals. Sophomore attack Devin Spencer earned all three of his tallies during the furious six-goal run and added one assist for four points, tied with sophomore midfielder Jeff Trainor (one goal, three assist) for the team lead. Freshman midfielder Kevin Tobin added two goals and dished one assist while senior attack/midfielder Buddy Carr scored twice. Freshman attack Chris Connolly and sophomore attack Jesse Leung netted a goal each while senior midfielder Jake Lisauskas had one point on an assist. Yale senior attack and two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist Ben Reeves led the Bulldogs with seven points via four goals and three assists. Jackson Morrill posted six points for Yale via a goal and five assists. Massachusetts controlled the faceoff dot on the strength of Noah Rak's 16-of-24 showing, which included 10 groundballs. Connolly, who mainly played behind the goal at X, scooped up nine groundballs. Yale's primary faceoff specialist, Conor Mackie, went 9-of-24 with five groundballs. Senior close defenseman Luc Valenza provided a career-high five caused turnovers and grabbed four groundballs. Valenza's position mates, freshman Jackson Suboch and junior Isaac Paparo, contributed a combined three caused turnovers and five groundballs to the defensive effort. Sean Sconone started in net and played the opening 21 minutes, 35 seconds with seven goals allowed and four saves. Hampton Brannon rotated in for the final 38:25, with four saves and six goals given up. The Bulldogs started the game with four of the first quarter's five goals, with the offense spread across four scorers. Leung's second conversion of the year, at the 4:58 mark, split the four Yale tallies in half. The visitors bumped their lead to 9-2 by halftime with a five-goal run in the second quarter as Reeves worked himself to a first half hat trick. Carr cut the deficit to 9-4 early in the third quarter with back-to-back man-advantage strikes. After Mackie was called for a 1-minute slashing penalty with five seconds to play in the second quarter, Carr converted 12 seconds into the third quarter for his first of two. Shortly after, John Daniggelis picked up a 30-second push with 11:35 remaining, and Carr scored as time expired on the penalty for his second straight extra-man opportunity goal. The Bulldogs offense answered with a four more scores spanning the break between the third and fourth quarters, which ultimately increased the Yale lead to 13-4 with 9:59 left to play. Following nearly four minutes of scoreless action, the Minuteman offense broke free for six consecutive goals in less than four minutes before the improbable comeback effort stalled. Spencer started the scoring streak with 6:02 on the Garber Field scoreboard clock and potted his second of the day only 34 seconds later. Trainor secured assists on both goals. After Rak won the ensuing faceoff, Lisauskas lured in his defender, ducked to his left and slotted a pass to Connolly's open crosse for the freshman's sixth goal of the season, as Massachusetts cut it to a 13-7 game with 5:09 to play. Tobin factored into the three final goals as he scored twice sandwiched around his first collegiate assist. The Reading, Massachusetts, native created his own opportunities with shots at the 4:26 and 2:20 marks, the last of which gave the game its final score. In between, Tobin drew the defense in as he sliced to the net before he opted to pass to an open Spencer at the crease for Spencer's third of the day. Massachusetts outshot Yale, 48-32, due to a sizable fourth quarter margin, when the Maroon and White earned a 21-5 edge in attempts. The Minutemen also collected 36 groundballs to 25 for the Bulldogs. UMass was 7-of-8 clearing with 12 turnovers while Yale finished 10-of-15 and coughed the ball up 16 times. Freshman goalie Jack Starr preserved the Yale victory with 15 saves. Follow Massachusetts men's lacrosse on Twitter (@UMassMLacrosse) and Instagram (@UMassMLAX).
