Second-ranked Boston College scored eight unanswered goals to propel the Eagles past No. 23 Notre Dame, 17-7, in the semifinal of the ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship Friday at Koskinen Stadium on the campus of Duke University. Boston College improved to 19-0 on the season, which is a new program record for most wins in a single-season. This will be BC's first appearance in the ACC championship game. Senior Kaileen Hart and junior Sam Apuzzo combined for eight of the Eagles' 17 goals. Hart finished the game with four goals and an assist for five points. It was the second straight game Hart notched four goals. Apuzzo had four goals and an assist and now has a team-high 75 goals. The game changed when the Eagles shut down the Irish offense in the final 13:54 of the first half. While the defense was stifling, the offense turned it on with six straight goals to take an 11-4 lead at the half. During the run, Dempsey Arsenault and Hart each had two goals, while Apuzzo and Tara Schurr registered a goal each. The momentum continued as Arsenault scored 11 seconds into the second half, followed by a tally from sophomore Cara Urbank and the lead extended to 13-4. BC responded with three straight goals from Apuzzo, Urbank and Taylor Walker as the 10-goal lead kept the clock running. BC held Notre Dame to just three goals in the second half to advance to the championship game on Sunday. It marked the second straight game she registered four goals. Junior Sam Apuzzo registered four goals and an assist. She also had four ground balls and four draw controls. Junior Dempsey Arsenault pitched in with three goals, one assist and five draw controls. Sophomore Lauren Daly had 11 saves, matching her career-high. She had 11 saves in the win over Louisville on March 17. Boston College had a 25-11 edge in ground balls. The Eagles also bested Notre Dame in shots, 40-21. The BC victory was the team's 19th of the season, setting a new single-season record for the Eagles. It marked the first time BC has advanced to the ACC Lacrosse Championship. HOW IT HAPPENED In the first 10 minutes, BC held a 4-1 lead behind two goals by Kaileen Hart and a goal and assist from Sam Apuzzo. Notre Dame's Andie Aldave stopped the Eagles run at 17:43, 4-2. Junior defender Elizabeth Miller tallied the Eagles fifth goal with 17:27 to play but Notre Dame responded with two straight goals and it was 5-4 with 13:45 to play. BC rallied back with three straight goals from Arsenault, Hart (3) and Apuzzo (2) for an 8-4 lead with 10:14 to play in the half. Notre Dame called a timeout and made a goalkeeper change as BC held an, 8-4, lead and had a 10-7 edge in shots on goal. The change did not make a difference as Arsenault struck for her second goal of the game at 6:54, BC 9-4. The offense kept rolling as Hart scored her fourth goal at 2:26 to play. The final goal of the half was converted after Tara Schurr made a great defensive effort that turned into a beautiful give-and-go goal to end the half, 11-4. Hart collected her fifth point of the half on the assist to Schurr. In the first 10 minutes of the second half, Boston College extended the lead to 15-5 on a 10-1 run which extended from the 13:54 mark of the first half. Arsenault, Urbank (2) and Apuzzo scored in the 4-1 second half run. Notre Dame scored its second goal of the half at 18:49 but Sam Apuzzo extended the Eagles lead with her fourth goal of the game – BC 17-6, with 17:11 to play.
