Second-ranked Boston College suffered its first loss of the season to fifth-seeded North Carolina, 14-11, in the final of the ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship today at Koskinen Stadium on the campus of Duke University. Boston College dropped to 19-1 on the season. This was BC's first appearance in the ACC championship game. Sam Apuzzo scored four goals while Cara Urbank and Kaileen Hart had two goals apiece. The Eagles never recovered from a first half five-goal run by the Tar Heels. During the run, Boston College committed four turnovers and UNC's lead grew to 5-2. BC had eight first half turnovers that resulted in a 9-6 deficit at the break. North Carolina's lead grew to 14-8 with 11:25 to play in the second half as the BC offense struggled to get going. Kaileen Hart and Sam Apuzzo scored within a minute of each other to cut into the lead, 14-10, with 8:05 to play. Despite the Eagles' 36-27 edge in shots, the story of the day was UNC's goalkeeper Taylor Moreno, who had 11 saves and was named the ACC Tournament MVP. Hart finished the tournament with 11 goals. HOW IT HAPPENED · Boston College jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind goals from Taylor Walker and Cara Urbank just four minutes into the play. · North Carolina would respond with five straight goals, three from Jamie Ortega, and the Tar Heels took a 5-2 lead with 16:20to play. · Junior defender Elizabeth Miller tallied the Eagles fifth goal with 17:27 to play but Notre Dame responded with two straight goals and it was 5-2 with 13:45 to play · Sam Apuzzo stopped the UNC run with her first goal at 15:08. It was her eight goal of the tournament for the junior. Hart cut the lead to one goal on her ninth goal of the tournament at 18:18, 5-4 UNC. · BC turnovers started to hurt the Eagles as North Carolina scored four straight goals for a 9-4 lead with 4:52 to play. · North Carolina opened the half with a 3-1 run behind a goal and assist from Olivia Ferrucci. Eagles lone goal was scored by Cara Urbank. · Apuzzo stopped a 10:46 second scoring drought by BC. It was Apuzzo's third of the day and BC was down, 12-8, with 15:36 to play. · Two more strikes by UNC extended the Tar Heel lead, 14-8, with 11:25 to play. · BC battled to cut into the lead but got as close as three goals with 1:34 to play on a goal by senior Tess Chandler.
