Holy Cross scored seven of the final nine goals of regulation to force overtime, but Kellie Gough made sure the Lehigh women's lacrosse season wouldn't end on Tuesday as the junior fired home her fourth goal of the game with 13 seconds left in overtime to give the Mountain Hawks a thrilling 16-15 win. With the Patriot League Quarterfinal win, Lehigh has now won three consecutive quarterfinal contests. Winners of seven straight on the season, the Mountain Hawks improve to 13-5, tied for the second most wins in program history and just one from tying the school's all-time record. Tuesday's victory also gives Jill Redfern 100 wins as Lehigh head coach. "I feel relieved to have won," said Redfern. "'It certainly could have gone the other way. I don't think we played our best lacrosse, but I also give a lot of credit to Holy Cross, who put together some really nice runs and put pressure on us. It took us quite a while to put them away tonight." Four different Mountain Hawks posted hat tricks, led by a career-high tying six points from Gough (four goals, two assists). Sophomore Sondra Dickey scored four goals to reach exactly 100 career points, also adding a career-high tying seven draw controls. Senior Haley Wentzel tallied three goals and an assist while junior Mary Ellen Carron did the same to tie a career-high four points. Freshman Julianne Puckette recorded a goal and two assists while sophomore Autumn Ryan tallied a goal and assist. Defensively, Lehigh caused 13 of Holy Cross' 18 turnovers, led by four apiece from senior Alexis King and junior Olivia Kelly, each tying their career highs. A game of runs began with Holy Cross scoring the first three goals before Lehigh responded with five consecutive goals, all coming in the span of 7:58. Carron's first of the game gave Lehigh a 5-3 lead with 5:46 remaining in the first half. Lehigh ended the half with consecutive goals to take a 7-4 halftime advantage. The Crusaders scored four of the first five second-half goals to pull even at eight, but the Mountain Hawks immediately answered. Gough's third of the game with 20:44 left in the second half gave Lehigh the lead back at 9-8, sparking a 5-0 Mountain Hawks' run. Two of the next four goals were scored by Dickey as her 52nd of the season gave Lehigh a 13-8 lead with 14:22 remaining. Holy Cross wouldn't back down, scoring four goals in the span of 2:12 to pull within 13-12. Lehigh always seemed to have an answer, until the final minute of regulation when the Crusaders scored at the 0:49 and 0:05 marks to even the score at 15. That set the stage for overtime where each team had multiple opportunities. Each goalkeeper made a big save, but Holy Cross keeper Julia Maloney couldn't stop Gough's final shot as she took a feed from junior Olivia Kelly and buried her 30th goal of the season to send Lehigh to a semifinal rematch against Navy on Friday evening. Final shots were tied at 35 apiece while Lehigh held a 21-19 edge in groundballs. Holy Cross finished with a 22-13 advantage in draw controls, but the Mountain Hawks won both draws of overtime. With the win, the Mountain Hawks advance to the Patriot League Semifinals against second-seeded and No. 10 ranked Navy on Thursday night at 7 p.m. No. 5 seed Boston University will face top-seeded Loyola at 4 p.m. Both semifinal contests will be played at Loyola's Ridley Athletic Complex.
