The Basics • Score: #2 Maryland-16, #23 Johns Hopkins-11 • Records: JHU (10-8) • UM (17-1) • Location: Ann Arbor, MI • U-M Lacrosse Stadium • The Short Story: Top-seeded Maryland held off a late rally by the Johns Hopkins women’s lacrosse to win 16-11 in the Big Ten semifinals Friday afternoon in Ann Arbor. How it Happened • Hopkins got on the board first when sophomore Maggie Schneidereith found classmate Mackenzie Heldberg in the right alley for the quick-stick shot just 88 seconds in. Caroline Steele answered with three straight goals to spark an 8-0 Maryland run that spanned 16 minutes. • Sophomore Lexi Souder ended the Terps’ run at the 8:09-mark, igniting a three-goal run for the Blue Jays as they made it an 8-4 game with 4:53 to go in the half. Heldberg scooped up a ground ball off a missed shot and found Souder on the doorstep for the score. Just 48 seconds later, Schneidereith scored on a no-look, low-to-high shot with a defender on her back. Heldberg capped the spurt when she beat her defender, cut inside and beat Megan Taylor with a side-arm shot. • The Terps answered with a three-goal spurt of their own, including a pair of man-up goals, to take an 11-4 lead into the half. • Heldberg once again opened the scoring, with a high-to-low shot off the dodge at the 26:54-mark. Grace Griffin answered with back-to-back goals from in-tight and Maryland led 13-5 three minutes later. Hopkins capitalized in transition to get one back less than a minute later. Freshman Jeannie Kachris caused a Terrapin turnover and classmate Trinity McPherson bounced on the loose ball, sparking the transition. On the other end, Heldberg found junior Miranda Ibello on the back post and she scored on a low shot. • Terps answered with another pair of goals and the lead was 16-6 with 21:17 left in the game. The Blue Jay offense took over from there as freshman Shelby Harrison scored on a free position shot to ignite a five-goal run. Less than three minutes later, freshman Aurora Cordingley redirected a pass from Ibello to make it an eight-goal game. • Senior Shannon Fitzgerald followed with a goal on the run after weaving through the Maryland defense at 7:48. Heldberg made it four in a row with her fourth of the game when she dodged from behind the cage, cut back on her defender and blew a shot past Taylor at 4:53. Cordingley had what turned out to be the final goal of the game at the 1:56-mark, making it a five-goal game. From behind the cage, Ibello slipped a pass to a cutting Cordingley, who scored from the doorstep. What it Means • Hopkins falls to 0-18 against Maryland in the sixth meeting in the series in the last 25 months. • Heldberg tied a JHU postseason record with her four goals, while her six points are two shy of the program postseason record. It is the most points by a Blue Jay in a postseason game since Taylor D’Amore had six versus Georgetown in 2014. Heldberg has tallied 31 points in the last seven games. • Ibello moved into a tie for 17th in school Division I history with 118 career points. Fitzgerald is now tied for ninth with 110 career goals. • Crosson finished with 13 saves, one shy of her career high. It is her eighth double-digit save performance of the season and third straight.
