For the second time in program history, the University of Richmond men's lacrosse team is heading to the NCAA Tournament as the Spiders won their first-ever Southern Conference Tournament championship. The Spiders came back from a three-goal deficit after the first period to send the game to overtime, and junior Teddy Hatfield scored the game-winner with 1:32 remaining in the first sudden victory period to clinch the program's second NCAA berth in the program's five-year history and first since 2014. The Spiders will now await their fate in the NCAA Tournament. The 2018 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship Selection Show is scheduled for Sunday, May 6, at 9 p.m. on ESPNU. "It's an indescribable feeling," head coach Dan Chemotti said. "I am so happy for our guys for never giving in today and battling back. There was no panic in our team today and it was a remarkable performance to win the championship in front of our crowd." Junior Ryan Lee finished the day with a game-high seven points, while also breaking the tournament record for points (12) and assists (6). The Spiders' 27 goals and 22 assists through the weekend were also tournament records. The Spiders started hot with two goals in the opening two minutes from Mitch Savoca and Ryan Lanchbury, but the Dolphins responded with two goals of their own to tie things up at 2-2. Mitch Goldberg got on the board to retake the lead for Richmond on Lee's second assist of the day before Jacksonville responded once again, this time with four straight tallies to take a 6-3 lead into the second quarter. The Spiders rebounded to score three of the next four goals and cut into the Dolphin lead. Lee and Tyler Shoults each scored their first of the afternoon, before Savoca logged his second goal. The two teams would go scoreless over the final 6:39 of the quarter, sending the Dolphins into the break with a 7-6 lead. After Jacksonville opened the third quarter with its eighth goal, Goldberg stepped up to score his second of the day, once again on an assist from Lee, and Savoca completed the hat trick to tie the game at 8-8 with 4:19 to play in the quarter. The Dolphins had the last say in the third quarter, scoring with 13 seconds remaining and taking the lead into the final stanza. Another Jacksonville goal put the visitors on top by two, but Lee tallied his second of the day and sixth point off an assist from Goldberg to cut the lead back down to one with under four minutes remaining. Lee continued to play hero for the Spiders, scoring with 1:27 to play to tie the game for his seventh point of the day and SoCon Tournament-record 12th of the weekend. The Dolphins looked to take the win in the closing seconds, but Blake Goodman's 11th save of the day would send the game to overtime. Hatfield's lone goal of the afternoon was a big one, as he scored to end the game on an assist from Lanchbury 2:28 into the first overtime to seal the victory. Hatfield was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, while Lee, Savoca, Austin Cates and Goldberg were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
