WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team returned to its winning ways with an 8-4 victory over visiting Providence in BIG EAST action on Saturday afternoon. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Hoyas and puts the Blue & Gray in the driver's seat to secure a berth in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament. Jake Carraway (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) led the Hoyas with four goals while Craig Berge (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) added a goal and two assists and Daniel Bucaro (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) chipped in three assists. Lucas Wittenberg (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison/Mercer) and Matt Behrens (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) both notched a goal and an assist and Austin McDonald (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep) tallied a lone goal. With his first assist of the game, Berge reached the 100 career point mark. He became just the 22nd Hoya to achieve the milestone and moved into sole possession of 14th place all-time at GU in career assists. Defensively, Nick Marrocco (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) led the Hoyas with a 12-save performance in goal, including six in the third quarter. Gibson Smith (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial), Kieran Jenkins (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) and Greg Galligan (Oyster Bay Cove, N.Y./St. Anthony's) were each credited with three caused turnovers and Marrocco led all Hoyas with four ground balls. Georgetown took the early advantage, scoring just 41 seconds into the game courtesy of McDonald's goal. Providence answered back to even things at 1-1 at the 8:28 mark before Carraway scored the first of his four goals on the day with 5:51 remaining in the frame to give the Blue & Gray a 2-1 lead after the opening quarter. In the second period, both squads matched each other goal-for-goal to make it a 4-3 game at the half. All four goals in the stanza were scored by different players, kicked off by Berge's man-up score 26 seconds in. Georgetown took control of the game in the second half, outscoring the Friars 4-1 the rest of the way. A 3-1 third quarter led to the Hoyas blanking their guests, 1-0, in the fourth. The Blue & Gray held Providence to scoreless droughts of 15:40 and 20:48 spanning the final three periods. Four different Friars scored lone goals in the game with Brendan Kearns leading all PC players with a goal and an assist. Tate Boyce collected nine saves between the pipes in the loss. The Hoyas return to action on Tuesday, April 10 as they host Loyola Maryland for a rescheduled nonconference showdown. Faceoff is set for 3 p.m. at Cooper Field.
