- Closing the 2018 regular season, the St. John’s lacrosse team fell, 11-6, to No. 17/17 Georgetown on Saturday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field. The Hoyas (10-4, 3-2 BIG EAST) used a 4-0 spurt midway through the fourth quarter to turn a 6-5 lead into a 10-5 advantage to pull away for the win. The Red Storm (6-8, 0-5 BIG EAST) honored its seven seniors prior to the contest, highlighting the multiple achievements accomplished on-and-off the field during their four-year careers. Jake Carraway led all scorers with three goals and an assist for the Hoyas as the visitors saw six-different players reach the scoresheet. Jason DeBenedictis closed his collegiate career in style, finishing with three assists for another multi-point effort and closes his season with a career-high 45 points. The trio of helpers moves the senior to sixth on the all-time scoring list at St. John’s with 129 career points. DeBenedictis also finishes fifth in program history with 85 career goals. Declan Swartwood led the offensive attack for the Johnnies with his fourth hat trick of the season. The junior concludes his season with multi-point games in six of his last seven tilts. Joe Madsen added a pair of goals to extend his point streak to 19 games dating back to last season. The sophomore also tallied multiple goals in ten of the 14 games this season to finish with a career-high 31 strikes and 40 points. Ryan Schaeffer scored his first goal since March 10 vs. Siena in the first quarter to finish with six goals on the season. The freshman also earned his first-career start on Saturday with Matt Oehl and Mike Madsen unavailable to play. Matt Hanley finished his career with another double-digit save effort as the senior turned aside 11 shots on a season-high 46 shot attempts in the defeat. The Bethpage native recorded 10-or-more saves in 10 of the 14 contests this season. Georgetown finished with a 28-14 advantage in groundballs, but St. John’s Luke Roediger led all players with six. The Hoyas also won the faceoff battle, 13-8, as Paul Tornatore emerged as the top man inside the X for the Johnnies with a 5-for-10 effort. The visitors struck earlier into the game, scoring the contest’s opening goal just 1:58 in before adding a second just over two minutes later for a quick 2-0 advantage. Penalties doomed the Johnnies in the opening portion of the quarter, committing a trio of infractions over a three-minute span to allow the Hoyas to attack with possession. Georgetown pushed its lead to 3-0 on a man-up goal by Craig Berge and the Hoyas went right back to the man advantage when John Saunders was given a 30-second minor for pushing. St. John’s killed off the opportunity, and finally looked to get settled in on offense. Colin Duffy had a great look right in front of the cage, but was stopped in-tight by Nick Marrocco to keep the three-goal lead intact. Moments after killing off another penalty, the Hoyas increased their lead to 4-0 when Matt Behrens followed up on a rebound and forced a Red Storm timeout. Out of the time, the Johnnies began to gain some momentum on the offensive side of the ball. Swartwood got the hosts on the board just 37 seconds after the Behrens goal when the junior rocketed a shot past Marrocco on a pass from DeBenedictis to cut the lead to 4-1. With only 19 seconds remaining in the opening frame, St. John’s cut into the deficit again when Schaeffer made a great move to the front of the net to score his sixth of the season, bringing the Georgetown advantage down to 4-2 after 15 minutes of play. St. John’s carried the momentum gained at the end of the first into the second, scoring the quarter’s first goal to cut the deficit to one. Hanley made a great save, found TJ Marron with an outlet pass, and the senior found fellow senior Corey Haynes inside the attacking zone. There, Haynes worked a 2-on-1 play with Joe Madsen to perfection as the sophomore scored his 30th goal of the season just 2:13 into the stanza. Neither team could find the back of the net for over ten minutes of action, but the Hoyas tallied late in the second quarter to carry a 6-4 lead into the halftime break. The strong defensive play carried into the second half, with both teams struggling to beat the goalkeepers. The Hoyas had the best chance of the third quarter when Behrens fired back-to-back shots off the iron and out. St. John’s cut the lead to 5-4 with 3:45 to play in the third as Swartwood used a defender as a screen to fire a shot into the top shelf, but Georgetown responded with 1:15 left to send the Hoyas to the fourth quarter with a 6-4 lead. Swartwood completed the hat trick to open the final frame when DeBenedictis set up the junior again for a shot that beat Marrocco low to again pull the Johnnies within one with plenty of time to play. After the goal, Georgetown erupted for three goals in 38 seconds and added a fourth goal just minutes later to build a 10-5 lead. Joe Madsen scored his second of the game off the third helper of the day for DeBenedictis, but the Hoyas tallied a final time to claim the 11-6 victory.
