UMBC held 20th-ranked Richmond scoreless for over 35 minutes and scored six goals in that span to erase a 5-2 deficit and defeat the Spider, 9-6, in the opener for both teams. The game was played in a steady, chilly rain on the turf at UMBC Stadium. UMBC freshmen netminder Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was brilliant in his debut. He entered the game at the 9:10 mark of the first quarter and proceeded to save 13 of 15 shots put on goal by the Spiders in the final 50:50 of action. Retriever junior midfielder Billy Nolan (Croton, Md./Arundel) posted his fourth career hat-trick and added an assist, but he had ample help from a pair of freshman from nearby Severna Park (Md.) High School. High school teammates Steven Zichelli (2 goals, 2 assists), a midfielder, and Trevor Patschorke (2 goals), an attackman, played key roles in the Retrievers' surge. Junior Teddy Hatfield led the Spiders with two goals and a helper. Nolan got on the board first, scoring an unassisted goal just 1:55 into the game, but the Spiders reeled off four straight over a five-minute span, prompting a Retriever time-out and insertion of Lingner into the goal in place of red-shirt junior David Pisanic (Towson, Md./Boys Latin) (2 saves, 4 ga). Nolan would feed junior midfielder Blake McDermott (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) for a key goal on a clearing situation to stop the run with just six seconds left in the first quarter. Hatfield got that goal back at the 12:49 mark of the second, but that would be the last UR goal until he tallied again with 6:38 left to play. Zichelli, whose twin brother Michael shared several second-half midfield runs with him, scored with 5:22 to play in the second, then fed Nolan with 1:42 to play to shave the UR lead to 5-4 at halftime. Nolan bounced a shot past Richmond netminder Blake Goodman (6 saves) just 45 seconds into the third quarter to knot the score at 5-all, then Zichelli score the go-ahead goal just 73 seconds later. Then, Patschorke went to work, notching the third quarter's final goal (7:05 remaining) and the fourth's first (11:12 remaining) to give the Retrievers an 8-5 cushion. After Hatfield's goal ended the UR drought, Lingner made two key saves to keep the UMBC lead at 8-6, before UMBC junior defenseman Jason Brewster (San Diego, Calif.) sealed the win by firing a shot home into an unguarded net from the UMBC logo in the center of the field with 65 seconds to play. The Retrievers won their opening game for the first time since 2011. Richmond won most of the statistical battles after building up big leads in the first half. But UMBC outshot the Spiders, 16-15, in the final 30 minutes and won five of eight second half draws. Sophomore face-off specialist Jake Brothers (Elkridge, Md./Mount St. Joseph) won 9-of-19 draws and led the Retrievers with six ground balls. Senior defender John Tornabene (Havre de Grace, Md./Archbishop Curley) corralled four ground balls and caused three turnovers.
