Trailing for a majority of the game, the Towson University men's lacrosse team used a 4-1 fourth quarter to rally past visiting UMBC Saturday afternoon at wind-swept Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. Junior attackman Jon Mazza had a career day for Towson (2-3) with seven points on five goals and two assists. It is the fifth time in the Shawn Nadelen Era (2012) a player had at least seven points. Redshirt freshman keeper Shane Brennan collected the first win of his Towson career. UMBC (1-3) was paced by a hat trick from Trevor Patschorke while Ben Keller had a pair of goals. How It Happened UMBC struck first at the 8:11 mark on Patschorke's first goal of the day. Mazza tied game at 1-1 four minutes later, rifling home his eighth of the year at 4:04. But the tie was short lived as UMBC snagged a 2-1 lead at the end of the first half as Patschorke logged the second goal of his afternoon at 2:10. Both teams scored twice in the second frame, led off by a Timmy Monahan goal as Mazza dumped a skip pass over top of the UMBC defense. Monahan's marker tied the game at 2-2. Keller scored back-to-back goals for the Retrievers, putting UMBC up 4-2. Jack Andrews had the assist on the second goal. Mazza cut the led back to one at the 1:25 mark of the second quarter as he hit a rocker step five yards up from the goal line and spun on his defender, sending Towson into the locker room trailing 4-3 at halftime. Again both teams scored once in the third frame as Jake McLean scored in transition on a trickling goal from 15 yards out on a Mazza feed. UMBC took its final lead of the game at 7:01 of the third after a pair of Towson penalties put the Retrievers on a 6-on-4 extra-man chance. Patschorke logged the final goal of his day on an Andrews dish. Trailing 5-4 after 45 minutes, Towson reeled off four-straight goals at the start fourth quarter. Mazza scored back-to-back goals less than 50 seconds apart to give Towson its first lead, 6-5, at 10:33 of the fourth. The second Mazza goal in the run was on an extra-man chance after a bench penalty was assessed against UMBC. Jean-Luc Chetner extended his point streak with a man-up assist. Grant Maloof extended the scoring run at 7:38 of the fourth after shaking off his defender and driving the left side for his sixth goal of the year. Mazza capped the run 90 seconds later to make it 8-5 after juking past his defender and scoring on the short side of the goal. Ryan Frawley logged the final goal of the day at 3:20 of the fourth, cutting Towson's lead to 8-6. The Tiger successfully killed off the remainder of the clock to secure its second home win of the season. Behind the Numbers For the fourth time since Nadelen took over, a player finished with seven points as Mazza was the first since Ryan Drenner notched the same number against Georgetown on Feb. 27, 2016. Mazza is the first Towson player to score exactly five goals since Mike Lynch drilled Fairfield for the same on April 23, 2016. Mazza has successfully logged at least one point in each of his six games. Chetner's extra-man feed improved his point streak to 10 games, dating back to his days with Richmond. Maloof and Monahan also added to their point streaks, the former's going to four and the latter to three in a row. Junior faceoff specialist Alex Woodall, who had a tough first quarter on Wednesday at No. 9 Loyola, responded on Saturday, winning 15 of his 18 draws. He went a perfect nine-for-nine in the second half. Woodall won the final 12 draws of the day. Towson had just two failed clears, gaining the zone 10 times on 12 qualifying chances. UMBC also had two failed clears, going 15-of-17 on the day. The Tigers halted a three-game skid when trailing at the start of the fourth quarter. Brennan made five saves in his first career victory, all coming in the first three quarters. UMBC managed just one shot on goal in the fourth quarter as the Tiger defense limited the Retrievers to six total shots in the frame. Towson out-shot UMBC 37-30 as the Tigers won their seventh-straight game over their crosstown rivals. With the win, the Tigers avoid the Baltimore Sweep after falling on the road at No. 14 Johns Hopkins and No. 9 Loyola. The Tigers collected 29 ground balls, behind a game-high 11 from Woodall. Towson took three penalties in the game, holding UMBC to 1-of-2 on the extra-man. The Tigers scored once on four man-up chances. Up Next for Towson Towson hits the road for its longest road trip to date as the Tigers head to Columbus, Ohio on Saturday. The Tigers take Ohio State, which was ranked fourth in the most recent USILA Coaches' Poll, in a rematch of the 2017 NCAA Tournament Semifinals. Game time is set for 4 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on the Big Ten Network. Ohio State (4-1) fell in its last game, dropping an 8-7 decision against Marquette in the first game of the Midwest Lacrosse Classic in Pontiac, Michigan. The Buckeyes conclude the Classic on Sunday against host Detroit Mercy.
