The No. 7 Navy women's lacrosse team (18-4) posted a valiant effort, but came up just short, falling to defending National Champion Maryland (20-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The Mids close out the season at the NCAA Quarterfinals, finishing one game short of back-to-back Final Four appearances. "It was a disappointing loss for Navy," head coach Cindy Timchal said after the game. "We put it all out there on the line today and came up short. I am proud of our captains who are here, Blake and Julia, as well as the entire team for putting out the effort today. It wasn't good enough to, but 'Go Navy Women's Lacrosse!'" Offensively, the Midshipmen tallied 15 goals on 30 shots, including 28 shots on goal. Navy was led by team captain Julia Collins (Clarksville, Md.) who finished the game eight goals, tying the Mids' school record for goals in a game. She was joined by Andie O'Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) who closed out the game with a pair of goals. Jenna Collins (Clarksville, Md.) led the way with four assists, finishing the day with five points. Defensively, Navy caused eight of Maryland's 12 turnovers. The Mids backline limited the Terps' offensive attack. Ingrid Boyum (Herndon, Va.) recorded her 15th career double-digit save effort and the 10th time in her career with 10 or more saves against a ranked opponent, finishing the game with 10 stops. Natalie Irwin (Annandale, Va.) and Marie Valenti (Bechtelsville, Pa.) each finished the game with two caused turnovers apiece. For Valenti, the two CTs gave the junior 85 for her career, setting a new Navy record. Valenti surpassed Caitlin Mandrin Hill (2008-11) who previously held the record with 84 caused turnovers. Senior captain Blake Smith (Sykesville, Md.) had the task of guarding Tewaaraton Award Finalist Megan Whittle. Smith held one of the nation's most prominent scorers to just three goals - two of which game on free-position opportunities - while keeping Whittle scoreless for the first 50 minutes of the game. Maryland won the possession battle, coming away with 21 draws, compared to 13 by Navy. Kayla Harris (Annapolis, Md.) led the Midshipmen with six draws, while O'Sullivan added four on the day. Navy opened the game quickly, rattling off a pair of goals. Julia Collins opened the scoring just 56 seconds into the game and Harris followed off an assist from Jenna Collins with just over 28 minutes to play in the first half. Maryland responded with an 8-1 run to take an 8-3 lead. The Mids' loan goal in the run came from Julia Collins with 20:42 to play. The Terps' 5-0 run following the goal kept the Mids scoreless for nearly 10 minutes. The Midshipmen broke out of the slump in a big way, closing out the first half with a 7-1 run to take a 10-9 advantage into halftime. Julia Collins netted back-to-back goals to start the run. After a UM goal, Kelly Larkin (Alexandria, Va.) found the back of the net. Jenna Collins netted a goal between a pair of goals by her twin sister Julia. O'Sullivan gave the Mids their first lead since the game was 2-1 with a goal with 42 ticks left on the clock. Coming out of halftime, Meg O'Donnell (Forest Hill, Md.) and Julia Collins opened up the scoring for the Midshipmen to give the visitors a 12-9 advantage. The Terrapins responded with a pair of goals, but Navy once again answered with goals by O'Sullivan and Julia Collins to give Navy a three-goal edge, 14-11, with 18-minutes to play. Maryland took control of the game in the final 14 minutes, outscoring Navy 6-1 down the stretch. During the run, the Terps converted four free-position opportunities. The run included three goals by Whittle that tied the game and gave the hosts the lead for good. Nicole Victory (Issaquah, Wash.) closed out the scoring with a free-position goal with 2:16 on the clock. It was the freshman's sixth consecutive game with a goal. Navy closes out the 2018 campaign in the NCAA Quarterfinals with an 18-4 overall record. The Mids won their second consecutive Patriot League Championship, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in the program's 11th season. The Midshipmen's only losses came against top 10 opponents, while picking up four victories against ranked foes. Navy became the first team in the Patriot League to have three players finish the year with 100 or more points as the Collins twins and Larkin all finished the year with 100 or more points.
