Boston College advanced to its second consecutive women's lacrosse championship weekend, downing Stony Brook, 12-11, on a Dempsey Arsenault goal at the 1:42 mark in double overtime. The junior converted the sudden victory tally on a lob pass from Sam Apuzzo from behind the net, beating Seawolves' goalkeeper Anna Tesoriero. The Eagles started the match with three unanswered goals on their first three shots on-goal less than two minutes in. Stony Brook got on the board at the 22:31 mark, but Emma Schurr would respond a minute and a half later on a free possession goal. BC led 4-1 with 21:01 left in the half. Arsenault's second tally of the game came on an impressive play, a backhand off a reverse pivot, giving Boston College a 5-2 advantage midway through the first half. But the Seawolves would come alive, outscoring the Eagles, 5-1, over the rest of the half as BC went scoreless for close to 13 minutes. Stony Brook led, 7-6, at the break. In the second half, Kaileen Hart's goal with 23:25 left in regulation - on a pass from Tess Chandler - made it 8-8. But the Seawolves would take control over the next 10 minutes, building a three-goal lead. SBU's Ally Kennedy made it 11-8, with 15:59 left on a free possession goal. BC chipped away at the lead, as Hart scored on a free possession (14:37), making it 11-9. Tess Chandler provided the next two goals in similar fashion, on quick stick plays in the middle of the scoring zone. The senior from Hopkinton, Mass. scored at the 11:32 and 3:39 marks to tie the contest at 11. Eagles' goalkeeper Lauren Daly came up with one of the biggest saves of the season on a late attack by Stony Brook with less than two seconds to play in regulation. In the first overtime, Stony Brook took possession off the draw and called time out to set up a play. But the Seawolves turned the ball over after blocked shot led to a shot clock violation. The Eagles did not score on their ensuing possession. The Eagles won the draw in the second OT, setting up the game-winning play at the 1:42 mark. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE With Sam Apuzzo's first half goal, the junior attacker broke her own BC single-season goals record with 81. Apuzzo tallied 80 goals a season ago. The junior and Tewaaraton Award finalist made seven draw controls and assisted on two goals - including the game winner. Apuzzo led the Eagles with three ground balls. Nine of the 15 Eagles that saw the field tallied at least one ground ball; five had at least two. Kaileen Hart scored a team-high four goals on the day. Six of her eight shots were on-goal. Dempsey Arsenault had another typical full stat line, with three goals, two assists, and a team-high nine draw controls. Tess Chandler added two goals and an assist. Lauren Daly made five saves in net for the Eagles, allowing 11 goals. She moves to 21-1 overall on the season. BC moves to 4-1 all-time versus Stony Brook in women's lacrosse. The two teams last met in 2016 in the NCAA Tournament, with the Seawolves earning an 11-9 victory. UP NEXT Boston College moves on to face top-seeded Maryland on Friday, May 25 in the national semifinals. NCAA Championship Weekend will be held on the campus of Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, N.Y. It will be a rematch of the 2017 national championship game as Maryland came away with a 16-13 victory last year at Gillette Stadium.
