Dartmouth men’s lacrosse will play its penultimate home game of 2018 this weekend, taking on Yale at 3 p.m. Even though there are four more games remaining on the schedule after this, just one more against Penn on April 21 will take place at Scully-Fahey Field. LAST TIME OUT Four players ended up with multi-point performances in Dartmouth’s 22-11 loss to No. 14 Cornell at Scully-Fahey Field on Saturday afternoon. Ben Martin and George Prince both scored two goals and tacked on a pair of assists for four points, while Jack Korzelius and Liam O'Connell had their first hat tricks of the season. Matt Paul, David Gallagher and Trevor Ballantyne had one point each and Kiernan Gunn had a career-high seven ground balls. In net, Alex Burnley had his first start since Feb. 24, ending up with five saves. The first shot of the game resulted in a Cornell goal just 36 seconds into the contest, but Dartmouth responded less than three minutes later with Korzelius’ ninth tally of the season, with the assist going to Gallagher. The Big Red took off and six unanswered goals in as many minutes put the visitors up, 7-1. Cornell found the back of the net twice more early in the second, but an O’Connell marker at 9:07 broke up the Red’s streak, giving both he and Martin their first point of the afternoon. Four Cornell tallies within two minutes made it a 15-2 game heading to the half. Four of Burnley’s five saves in the first two quarters came in the final 10 minutes of the second. Dartmouth came out very well in the third quarter, outscoring Cornell, 5-4. Unassisted goals by Martin and Korzelius in the first 56 seconds started things off well and, after two quick Big Red markers, three Big Green tallies (two by Prince, one by Martin) within five minutes gave the control back to Dartmouth. A pair of Cornell goals, including one with zeroes already showing on the clock, gave the Red a 19-7 advantage. Paul’s man-up tally started the fourth quarter in the Green’s favor, but Cornell countered with a man-up goal of its own a minute later, adding two even strength tallies within the next few minutes to make it a 22-8 contest. Dartmouth remained aggressive, continuing to test the Red goalies, and, following a two-minute Cornell penalty, netted three goals (two by O’Connell, one by Korzelius) with the extra player in 1:05 (22-11). SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS Yale was on a seven-game winning streak before a 9-8 loss to Bucknell in overtime on Wednesday. Prior to that, the Bulldogs went undefeated for a month and a half, falling to Villanova in their first game on Feb. 17. The Bulldogs are first in the Ivy League following wins over Cornell, Princeton and, most recently, Penn. Ben Reeves leads the team in goals (26), assists (21) and points (47). LAST TIME AGAINST YALE On April 8, 2017, the Green played a strong second half against the 17th-ranked Bulldogs, ultimately falling by a score of 13-6 on the road. Richie Loftus led the team with two goals and an assist for three points, while Martin had two points from one of each. Four other Dartmouth players ended the afternoon with one point apiece. Jack Richardson was first on the team with four ground balls. LEADING THE WAY Prince is still first in assists (12) and points (24), while Martin has a team-leading 17 goals and is right behind Prince with his 22 points. O’Connell leads with three man-up tallies and Austin Meacham is first with 22 ground balls, followed very closely by Gunn with 21, Chris Bacotti has gone 12-25 (.480) at the X. AND IN NET In 302 minutes, George Christopher has appeared in six games and started five. He has made 60 saves while allowing 57 goals for a .513 save percentage and 11.31 goals against average. After having played all 60 minutes against Cornell, Burnley has now played 177 minutes, making 24 saves while allowing 46 goals for a .343 save percentage and 15.53 goals against average.
