The Hobart College lacrosse team overcame a six-goal deficit to defeat Colgate University 12-11 on Boswell Field this afternoon. Sophomore Justin Scott scored a career-high six goals, tying the record for a Statesman in a Division I game. Scott caught fire in the fourth quarter, producing a natural hat trick in less than four minutes. He also fired home the game-winning goal with 3:23 remaining in the contest. On the difference maker, he got a step on his man behind the cage, ran past goal line extended on the edge of the crease, and shoveled home his team-leading 13th goal of the year. Hobart's defense recovered from a shaky start to make the lead stand up. Sophomore goalie Sam Lucchesi made two of his career-high nine saves in the final three minutes. Sophomore Sam Mueller shared game-high honors with six ground balls and added two caused turnovers. Senior Christopher Willman added five GBs and two caused turnovers. Junior Chris Aslanian added three goals and an assist to the winning effort while senior Mason Burr handed out a pair of assists. Junior Matthew Pedicine won 14-of-24 faceoffs, including all five in the third quarter. He also scored his first goal of the season, giving Hobart (2-3) an 11-10 lead with under six minutes to play. Senior Joe Delaney had a team-high three points for Colgate (3-3), scoring twice and handing out an assist. Senior Chase Wittich and junior Duncan Hoskinson each tallied a pair of goals. Sophomore Parker Baddley and senior Collin Orr both collected six ground balls. Junior Connor Mullen made 12 saves in goal. Hobart's comeback was necessitated by the Raiders' fast start. The visitors came out firing on all cylinders, scoring five times in the first six minutes of the game. Wittich produced both of his goals in the opening flurry. Scott got Hobart on the board with just over four minutes left in the opening quarter, but Colgate rang up three of the frame's final four goals, including Baddley's buzzer beater for an 8-2 lead at the end of one. Hobart used the time between quarters to regroup and completely shutout the Raiders in the second quarter. The Statesmen didn't make up much ground before halftime though as a Scott goal off an Aslanian assist proved to be the only goal of the frame. In the third quarter, Aslanian scored twice and junior Kyle Grimaldi scored once to make it an 8-6 game. Hoskinson stopped Colgate's scoring drought at just short of 29 minutes, netting his seventh goal of the year with 15 second left in the third. The Raiders opened the fourth quarter scoring for a 10-6 lead, but then Scott went off to make it a 10-9 game. With just under six minutes to go, first-year Ryan Archer pounced on a loose ball right in front of the Colgate goal and dunked it to tie the game at 10. Pedicine won the ensuing faceoff clean and charged straight to goal, giving Hobart its first lead. Less than a minute later, Delaney knotted the game at 11, setting the stage for Scott's game-winner and the defense's last stand. After getting outshot 14-6 in the first quarter, Hobart finished with a 44-34 advantage. The Statesmen also won the battle for ground balls 32-25, had a 14-12 edge in faceoffs and committed three fewer turnovers (11-14). Hobart will be on the road for its next two games, starting with a trip to the nation's capital to face Georgetown (5-0) on Saturday, March 10. The opening faceoff is scheduled for noon.
